These Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders are fantastic – perfect for tailgating, or just a quick dinner at home!
Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders – Make These TONIGHT!
If you were to ever pick just ONE recipe to make ham and cheese sliders using Hawaiian bread for the rest of your life, it would be these. Like, you really, have to make them. They're just that good!
🍴 MENU PLAN NOTE: This recipe can also be found in our Freezer Meals Plan: Week 10!
A few years ago I was heading out to scrapbook with a few friends for the weekend, and we each bring along a dish to share. While I've made these slow cooker ham and swiss sliders before, I was in a hurry and found these sandwiches, and oh-my-word, I'm so glad I did! I will never make these sandwiches another way.
These were heavenly. I left my husband a batch at home that weekend and he devoured them, in the midst of surviving three kids all by himself. Normally that's not a big deal, but he was on crutches at the time so I figured the least I could do was cook for him!
These are SO good and they're just perfect for making up ahead of time (you can even freeze them!) Think of these for busy nights when you're running around to different activities and need to get dinner done FAST. And plus, I'm pretty sure it's impossible to mess up a King's Hawaiian Roll (you can use a plain ole' bakery roll, but there's something just perfect about those Sweet Rolls that makes everything taste divine . . . ), and secondly ~ well ~ butter, onion, ham and Swiss . . . need I say more?
Here's how to make Ham and Cheese Sliders in just a few easy steps:Â
First, gather up your ingredients:
You'll want to grab some Hawaiian Rolls, quality cheese, a good deli ham and your toppings (this is where all the flavor comes from!)
We have always used King's brand Hawaiian Rolls, but many grocery chains now carry generic, so keep an eye out for that! You can also sub a different flavor of cheese if you don't like Swiss – Provolone or White American would be delicious too. You'll also want to have aluminum foil for baking and extra for freezing if you don't want to eat these right away.
Quick Instructions:
To get started making your hot ham and cheese sliders, you'll want to separate the top of the rolls from the bottom of the dinner rolls. You can use a serrated knife to do this (just try to keep it even!)
Mix up your poppy seeds, melted butter, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard to make a yummy butter mixture. You could also just use a honey mustard mix, but we really love the butteriness of that mix 🙂 Spoon half of this over your bottom layer of rolls. You could even add a bit of onion powder to the mixture too if you prefer!
Next, take your ham and Swiss cheese and layer over the bottom of the sliders. Top with the other half of the rolls, drizzle the rest of the butter sauce, cover with foil, and preheat your oven.
If you're making these up right away to eat (maybe for game day?), place them either on a slab of aluminum foil or into a baking dish and cook for about 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted through.
YUM!
Can you freeze Ham and Cheese Sliders?
You can absolutely freeze Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders – in fact, this recipe comes from our Menu Planning Made Easy Freezer Meal Plan! The main difference is that instead of cooking these right away, you'll wrap them up tight to protect from freezer burn, and place in the freezer. When you're ready to eat them, thaw overnight, and then cook according to the directions listed below.
These are great for preparing ahead of time for quick dinners, parties, or even to take along on vacation.

I tried these today with just a single 12-pack Hawaiian rolls from the grocery store. I halved the butter/mustard mixture and it was the perfect amount. I tried it with Everything but the Bagel seasoning as someone else suggested since I didn’t have poppy seeds and it was tasty. Also, I did half with Havarti cheese and half with Swiss cheese; personally I liked the Havarti best!
That sounds so yummy, Rachel!
How important are the poppy seeds to the overall taste?
You could totally skip the poppy seeds and it would still taste fine – hope that helps Tee!
I make these all the time and use everything bagel and it makes all the difference! Try it you won’t regret it!
I made these for a bridal shower and they are so quick and easy. Being able to put them together the night before really helped and allowed me to tend to last minute details and to have time to greet guests as they came in. The sandwiches looked so elegant and everyone loved them. I had several people ask for the recipe and they were all amazed how easy the recipe was! Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Do you use all of the butter mixture or just as much as you need? Seems like a lot.
I use most of it Katherine but you could definitely use less – a lot of it ends up in the bottom of the pan at the end of cooking. (Hope that helps!)
You can change up this recipe easily. Use provolone, honey dijon…and I add dried minced shallots, or you can use dried onions. Tear the ham with your hands….it’s easier to cut the sandwichs. Also, put down a layer of ham, a layer of cheese, then another layer of ham…this keeps the cheese from oozing out and burning.
Made these yesterday – I was in a rush so I just brushed my sammies with my mixture in the baking dish, baked for 20 minutes and they were perfect! I used honey dijon because my husband isn’t a huge fan of mustard either and the honey hides it well. They were so amazing!
Yay Amy – so glad you all enjoyed them!
Honey?
Sound delish. Do you put the top of the bun on too before you do the mustard mix? Thx!
Yes Zuni – hope that helps! 🙂
A little brown sugar makes everything better. I put some in my spaghetti sauce, my sauerkraut and my cabbage soup..mmmmmm
Ok, silly question here…Does the sauce taste super mustardy? I am not a fan of straight mustard, but I can handle something like a mustard-based bbq sauce. I don’t think I’ve ever used dry mustard so I just wasn’t sure what to expect? They look delicious!
It’s not mustardy at all – I completely understand but I think you’ll love them!
What size Hawaiian Rolls did you use? These look delish! Thanks for the recipe 🙂
I used two of the rectangular bags of Hawaiian Rolls – I think the best price I’ve seen on those is at Sam’s Club… I might have to swing by today to pick some up for the weekend! 🙂
