Has anyone else been curious if you can make Homemade Chex Mix in the Crock Pot?
After seeing a few pins on Pinterest where people used their crock pot, I was too! So, this past year when my hubby mixed up his annual big batch, we decided to bake half in the oven and cook the other half in the slow cooker.
Now, y'all know I'm a big fan of Mrs. Potts, but this time it just wasn't a win for me. We mixed everything up according to our regular recipe, then dumped half in the crockpot and baked the other half in our oven.
We cooked the Chex Mix in the slow cooker with the lid on according to several posts I'd seen, and stirred it every 30 minutes.Â
The results?Â
The oven clearly (overwhelmingly!) won.
The batch made in our slow cooker tasted almost stale, so during the last 30 minutes we took the lid off which seemed to help a bit. However, it just wasn't as good, and we ended up throwing most of it away.
If you've had better luck making Chex Mix in your crock pot I'd love to hear about it, but I'm thinking we'll stick with the oven from now on for our Homemade Chex Mix. 🙂Â
Have you tried Chex Mix in the slow cooker before? How did it work for you?Â

I would think if you used the crockpot that the condensation at the top would keep it wet so maybe putting a towel across then putting lid on that that would work better. The electric skittle sounds like something I need to try.

Has anyone ever tried making in on their smoker? I have had success making smoked nuts before. Wondered if this would be good.

I also use the microwave instead of the oven – much quicker. After mixing, I microwave on high in a microwavable pan for 2 minute intervals, stirring after each one. Usually takes 3 or 4 cycles to get Chex crispy, but will burn quickly if not watched (tasted). I also use any combo of items I might have on hand….Chex, pretzel sticks, small pretzels twists, cheese-its, sesame sticks, nuts of any kind, cheerios, etc. Spread on paper towels or parchment to cool, then put in tight container. Will keep for a long time but ours usually disappears pretty quick!

I do this exact same method! Works great every time!

Tell your hubby to try baking the dry mix for 15 minutes before adding the butter and spice mixture, and bake for 45 minutes (or one hour total). This method results in ver crispy Chex mix!

Thanks so much for the tip Donna ~ good to know! 🙂

Cooking chex mix in an electric skillet is the way to go. I used to bake mine back when I didn’t have an electric skillet and baked chex mix was almost as good as chex mix made in an electric skillet. It just tastes so much better cooked in an electric skillet. I would think cooking chex mix in a crockpot would cook it too slow.

So good to know Beth ~ thanks a bunch for the tip! 🙂

I nuke mine for 9-12 minutes on high, stirring every 3 minutes and like as well as oven prepared.

I don’t use a crockpot but I do use my microwave. I have a large glass bowl that fits in my microwave. Microwave in 1 minute intervals stirring in between. All the recipes I find on the Chex website use the microwave. Dump it out on parchment paper to cool and it is crunchy and delicious and takes about 10 minutes.

That was a mistake Kathy – I just updated it (thank you for catching it!) 🙂
