As I type this I need to be walking out the door to my son’s sixth grade awards ceremony.  (I’m running late as always, and I’m pretty sure he’s used to it.)  For the last twelve years of my life, I’ve been the mommy to a newborn, infant, toddler, preschooler, and even elementary schooler.  But I can hardly believe that after next week my baby (ahem . . ) will be an all-grown-up middle schooler. 😉

On top of that, his baby sister (who really is a baby, really!!!) will be heading off to kindergarten the very same day that he starts middle school this August. (Is that even allowed?  I think all mommas should be exempt from doing both on the same day!)  I’m sad. . . I’m busy . . . and I’m a little too overwhelmed with all of it to even keep up.

I’m heading out the door though, so here I go (can’t you tell I’m walking???) Peek in on your little ones if they’re peacefully napping in your home right now, give a hug to your preschooler if they’re pulling on your leg while you try to get in a little reading, and say a prayer for your older child if they’re off in school at the moment too. It really goes too fast, doesn’t it?  Yup . . .walking out the door now (sniff…sniff…)

Mother, O’ Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth.
Hang out the washing, make up the bed,
Sew on a button and butter the bread.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.
Oh, I’ve grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue,
Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo.
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due,
Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek – peekaboo.
The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew,
And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo.
But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren’t his eyes the most wonderful hue?
Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo.
The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow,
But children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs; Dust go to sleep!
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.

I’m not a mother but I have many many nieces and nephews. At the end of this month, I have four of them who are moving on to the 5th grade. I’m aware that their school logos will no longer have teddy bears and balloons on them and gone are the single digit age numbers. Christmas and birthday presents are going to get harder to find. Styling products and deodorant scents are going to walk through the front door on cell phones and ipods that are too loud.
I don’t get teary about the fact that I’m getting older, I get teary when I think how they are. But you better bet that when their names are called at the ceremony I am going to be clapping loud and when the pictures are being taken I am going to hug them tight and remind them why I’m doing so.

I’m sure your nieces and nephews love having you so close to them Bree! It is so hard to watch them grow… but fun in a way too (I’m loving watching mine develop their own interests and confidence in different things.) But… I so wish we could hang on to those single digits a little longer! 🙂

My firstborn is graduating high school next Tuesday. She curled up next to me the other night on the couch for hugs. Boy was that nice!! Enjoy every moment because the time passes by in a hurry.

How precious Jennifer! I can’t even imagine watching mine graduate high school . . . I’m sure it’s an emotional roller coaster! I hope she has a wonderful graduation, and you enjoy every minute with her. 🙂

As the mother of a 14-month old who can’t believe her baby is walking, talking, and acting more like a precious 3-year old, the poem you posted made me tear up. Thanks.
