If you’ve hung out any length of time on Passionate Penny Pincher, you may feel like I’m drilling this one into your head, but I just don’t want anyone to miss it! You can use coupons every single time you shop, and you can shop every sale in town every single day of the week, but if you don’t know what what a good price is, you will spend too much money.  (Did you get that???  Please don’t miss it!)

Earlier this week I made a quick run into Kroger for some bread and bananas, and was overjoyed (seriously, elated!) when I saw bananas on Manager’s Special for $.35 a pound.  Had I seen those bananas last summer at that price, I wouldn’t have gotten all that excited (because last summer it wasn’t uncommon at all to find bananas priced around $.39/lb. . . .)  But, it has been months since I’ve seen bananas below $.59/lb., and trust me, I’ve watched!  So, I grabbed oodles, and skipped out the door with my deal. 🙂

If I wasn’t sure of my prices, I would happily grab a bunch of bananas at Publix for $.69/lb. and not even think a thing about it.  But by being aware of what my price-points are on specific items, I always have some idea of what the best price available is.  While I don’t typically stockpile massive amounts of processed snacks (which was shown quite a bit on last night’s Extreme Couponing . . . ), you can bet I stock up on fresh produce when I see it.  (I can always freeze them for banana bread…)  Also, when I see ground beef or chicken breast priced below $1.49/lb., I buy as much as my budget can afford that week.

Do you know your prices?  If you don’t, take a minute to check out my target price list over HERE.  And just for fun, what are your target prices on. . .

  • Milk?
  • Bread?
  • Bananas?
  • Ground Beef?
  • Chicken Breast?
  • Orange Juice (that’s a hard one . . . I can’t ever seem to find a deal!)

my dad does have a small banana tree in his back yard…they are small but pretty good to eat…and, free…he has grapes, tomatoes too…wish he had a tree that grew money…LOL.

wow…I haven’t seen prices for banannas less than .69 a lb here in way over a year…south fla. If anyone knows a better price in the palm beach/vero beach area let me know. prices are out of control here..decent bread and cereal now approaching 4.50 a bag/box…milk over $4 a gallon…I don’t know how we are going to do it…my dad is especially getting hit hard…fixed income…we help out all we can. we don’t have double coupons either…and, work is hard to come by as well…oh well.

I think Florida prices are so high Vickie, but I’m surprised bananas aren’t cheaper (surely you guys are closer to bananas then we are!) 🙂 Hopefully your coupon deals will help to make those prices a little easier to manage – it’s amazing how much groceries can vary by area!

Can you believe that for the first time ever my store wouldn’t let me purchase the vanilla wafers w/o the coupon? I was in a hurry so I missed them 🙁 (And already had visions of making banana pudding …)

        • Laurie says

I think they literally changed it right before I went to purchase (at least that’s what they said). Not sure if it was by someone especially official, so hopefully it was a fluke Denise!

Too funny, because they had red-taped bananas at our Kroger last week too! And I grabbed a ton and made banana bread and froze it. (I also froze a bunch for smoothies.) It had been so long since they’d had any, and I was just as elated as you sounded 🙂

Milk: $3 max for a full gallon, but typically cheaper
    Bread: around $1 a loaf
Bananas: I don’t pay much attention because we buy only 4 at a time
Ground Beef: don’t buy it very often, so I don’t know!
Chicken Breast: under $1.49 a pound (we stocked up at the $.99 sale!)
Orange Juice: maybe $2.50? We only buy Simply Orange and try to find the $1 off coupons
    Deodorant: only pennies or free
    Toothpaste: only pennies or free

  6. Faith says

    Milk $2.98/gallon
Bread $0.88 for full loaf at Kroger
    Bananas $0.39-$0.49 lb @ Aldi
    Ground Beef $1.79lb
Chicken Breast $1.79lb for boneless, skinless
Orange Juice- Rarely buy unless I see it under $1
    Deodorant- free to $0.50
    Toothpaste- free

      • Faith says

I love their produce! They frequently have $0.99 mushrooms, $0.69 container of grape tomatoes, and $0.99 for two heads of broccoli! Bell peppers run 3/$0.99, and bags of fruit for $1.49 for 4lbs. The best part, I have found, is their produce is more fresh than what I get at Wal-Mart!

SO very true! Everyone needs a price list, What they pay for everything they buy. Then when it is less than that, buy. UR so right!
