DIY Board and Batten Wall – Find out how EASY this is to do!

I’ve been wanting to share this little (um, big?) board and batten wall DIY with you for quite a while now, but finally had time to tackle it! Several summers ago we decided to update Reagan’s bedroom (she was twelve at the time, and ready for a more grown up room and bigger bed), so we slowly made a few changes.

I’m a sucker for beautiful trim work, so board and batten trim is one of my favorite things to add to give a room instant character. We already have board and batten in our dining room, foyer and hallways, so this seamlessly fit with the rest of our home.

We found her new furniture through a friend from Pottery Barn (I love it. and the sizing is perfect)!

And since James is awesome at hanging trim, he set to work.

Her room was painted like the rest of our house in Sherwin Williams Seasalt, but we changed to the prettiest pink (Sherwin Williams Romance ~ I love it!)

And then . . . James got to work on this board and batten wall. (Bless that man!)

The reason alllll this happened now?

Well, when we were first married, we were on a crazy tight budget.

So tight that we lived without a couch in our living room for 18 months, because we really couldn’t afford a new one. (Since clearance paint was wayyyy cheaper than a couch, we saved time by never sitting on a couch and instead painted anything that would hold still.)

It was during that season that my smart (frugal!) hubby figured out that wood was cheap too. But labor was EXPENSIVE. So he started tinkering with a few trim projects around our home.

We’d make dinner at home (spaghetti ….again!) save the $20 we could have spent eating out on a Friday night, and swing by Lowe’s to buy a few boards. (His first project was a DIY table coffee table using 2x4s and a piece of plywood. I covered it with some fabric I found at Walmart for 98¢. IT WAS HIDEOUS. #bestmoneyeverspent

Looking back, I’m so glad we lived without that couch for so long, although I remember sitting on the floor where the couch belonged and just dreaming of what a couch must feel like. 😅 But learning to DIY everything was worth way more than a couch back then.

I remember looking at ALL the beautiful things in ALL the beautiful magazines and feeling a twinge of jealousy at what other folks had ~ but us *having* to wait for things forced us to be resourceful.

I’m so thankful for all we learned back then.

I’ll have James pop in here shortly and add alllll the measurements and materials he used for the trim work on the wall but clearly, he’s the rockstar around here! 🙂

In the meantime, what are you working on this weekend? What are you saving big for? What meal can you eat at home to save for something big today? I’d love to hear ~ I’m cheering for you! Be encouraged that learning while waiting is paving the way for big things ahead.

And poor James. I’m assigning him the laundry room next. I’ll let you know how it goes. 🙂

Have you done something fun in your home lately? I’d love to hear what you’re up to . . . a pretty fresh space on a budget is always my favorite thing to do. Happy Friday!

We recently installed a solid pine batten board ceiling in one of our bedrooms and I absolutely love the way it turned out. It was a lot of work but well worth the effort.

  2. Marsha says

I can’t find where James posted all the measurements and materials for this lovely wall; can you give me the link please? We finally have time to do this and I am so excited!

      • Jill Walden says

Hi Laurie! Could you please share what the name of the white paint you used you on the batten board? We are getting ready to redo all of our woodwork (painting over the stain) and I am really struggling with all the variations of white. I am leaning towards a true white which is what that looks like, but want just am curious. Thanks so much and have a blessed one!

        • Madison ~ PPP Team says

Hi Jill! The paint color is Sherwin Williams Romance. I hope that helps answer your question!

          • Dana B says

Madison – I thought the romance color is what is on the wall (the pink color) not the white color on the board. Do you know the white color? I was wondering the same question and see that question here 😉

          • Alice -PPP Team says

Sorry about that! I believe it’s the Sherwin Williams Pure White in Semi Gloss. Hope that helps! 🙂

I love this and have been wanting to do this myself. I am a single, novice grandmother. Do you think this is something I could do myself?

  4. S Dunn says

I was so excited to see how your husband did the diy……. How he put together, supplies, list of what to do Please update us on what to do:(:(

  5. Samantha says

So cute! We recently moved into a new build, I’ve been itching to do some projects to make the house ours but changing all the light fixtures and extreme design concepts aren’t in the budget right now. So I went to Home Depot, got some oops paint and painted the kitchen island. Just that little touch made the home come together.

  6. Teri says

Wow that looks so nice! Love it. Paint is our big project. Always enjoy all that you share. Thank you for all your time and effort . May God Bless you

  7. Kat says

We are doing this right now in our bedroom! Can’t wait!!! We both are noticing that the top is different from the other boards. What extra trim did you use? Size? And, do you have a close up? That’s it I think! Lol!

    • Laurie says

Hi Kat! My hubby used multiple pieces of chair rail to get the depth and shape he wanted – he found them at a local millworks store but Lowe’s might have it too! I’m going to have him update the post with better pics too – I’ll be sure to post them when he has them!

  8. Kim says

    Beautiful!
So- he cut and nailed (?) the painted wood then painted the dry wall? There’s nothing between wood strips, right?

  9. Kimberly L Prater says

It looks great. I love the color. It’s not an over the top pink. It’s calming. Great job.

  10. Donna Dean says

I love this! We just finished installing DIY wainscoting in our dining room. The chair rail was there. We chopped 1/4x1x8′ decorative wood sticks from Home Depot into frame lengths, painted, assembled into frames on the wall with liquid nails below the chair rail. Repainted (before installing frames) all the walls – top light gold, bottom and ceiling white. New rug. Next are plantation shutters. So fun!
