Passionate Giving: Operation Christmas Child + Giveaway

Congratulations to meganb….@gmail.com for winning the giveaway, and thanks so much to everyone who entered. (I loved hearing your sweet comments!) Comments on this post are now closed.

It’s week two of our Christmas donation chats, and I’m super excited to share another wonderful ministry with you. This week, we’re talking about Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child, which is one of my favorite ministries to donate through during the Holidays as it so easily allows us to share the importance of giving during the Christmas Season with our children.

Each year, my children choose an age and gender of a child in need to pack a box for, and then we head to the Dollar Tree to pick up items for those children in addition to a few items we add from our stockpile.  It literally takes us less than an hour to do, and reminds my children and myself that there are those in need all over the world.  Here are some of the items that we usually look for:

  • Balls
  • Sunglasses
  • Socks
  • Toothbrushes
  • Toothpaste
  • Soap
  • Candy (not chocolate as it will melt)
  • Coloring Books
  • Crayons
  • Small Stuffed Animals

We also enclose $7 which pays for the cost of shipping. Here’s a peek at what our boxes looked like this year as we filled them.

{Please bear with me ~ my husband was out of town for the weekend and happened to walk in during the middle of the video, so I was a little scatter-brained as I taped it! And of course, my regular camera wasn’t charged so this was taken on my iPhone ~ yikes…} ;)

The awesome folks at Samaritan’s Purse have partnered with me to give one lucky reader a fantastic giveaway, and I’m so excited that one of you will win this!  They’ve sent a Scotty McCreary Christmas CD, ten Operation Christmas Child Ornaments and a super cute Operation Christmas Child t-shirt for one lucky PPP reader.

Here’ s how to enter to win:

{Here’s a closer look at the t-shirt ~ I just got it in my mailbox last night and haven’t had a chance to iron it yet, but I promise you’ll love it!}

This giveaway will end next Monday night, 11/12/12 at 10 PM.  Good luck ~ I promise you’ll enjoy this, and hope that you’ll consider packing a shoebox to send as well.  If you’re not sure where to drop off your shoebox, visit the Samaritan’s Purse website to find out more details, and I can’t wait to hear how you all are giving! Also, if you choose to create a label online, you can track your shoebox right to where it goes ~ I love that! Thanks so much to Liz for sharing, and please let us know how you’re giving.

Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

Hurrican Sandy Relief Efforts

I so rarely watch TV that I stay pretty much out of the loop when it comes to national events.  But yesterday as I was driving I heard on the radio more details on those suffering from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and it just broke my heart ~ the devastation is almost too great to comprehend.

If you’re looking for a place to give, consider making a donation to one of the following organizations:

If you’re a local reader in the North Alabama area, relief efforts here locally coordinated through Toomer’s for Tuscaloosa will be collecting  water, canned food, hygiene items and baby care items at all three Huntsville area police precincts through November 11th to take to those in need in the Northeast.  You can find updated information on the Toomer’s for Tuscaloosa Facebook page.

While I know there is so much to do, even just a small donation made by each of us could have such an impact.  And if you’re in the areas ravaged by the storms, our thoughts and prayers are continually with you.

Passionate Giving: Local Food Pantries (Week One)

Holiday Food Box Deals

Note that you can click on the “Holiday Food Box Donation”  logo in the right sidebar or the Holiday Food Box Deals link at the top of the page to access the best prices currently available on items to fill your Holiday Food Boxes. Also watch for the red gift logo in our coupon matchups to find more deals.

Each Tuesday throughout November, Passionate Penny Pincher will highlight a charity in need this Christmas season.  While some of these are local charities in North Alabama (where we’re located), I’m betting a charity in your local area is looking for similar items, so hopefully you can find a place to give in your community as well!

This week’s ministry is the Asbury United Methodist Food Pantry, which provides Holiday Food Boxes to hundreds of people across North Alabama.  On November 3rd from 1-4 PM, Asbury’s Food Pantry is hosting a Family Food Box Packing Event, where volunteers will pack Holiday Food Boxes using using items from the food pantry shelves. To make sure they’re well supplied, they are looking for donations of the following items:

  • Canned Tuna, Chicken, Ham or Salmon
  • Canned Yams or Sweet Potatoes
  • Boxed, Bagged, or Canned Potatoes
  • Boxed Stuffing Mix
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Macaroni & Cheese
  • Cornbread Mix
  • Gravy Mix (or Canned Gravy)
  • Canned Fruits
  • Boxed Desserts
  • Applesauce

If you have even just a few of these items that you can donate to help fill those boxes, drop them off at the receptionist desk at Asbury UMC before 11/2/12. And, if you’re in another area, contact a local church to see if they’re accepting similar donations!

In addition to the Holiday Food Box Ministry at Asbury, they also provide weekend backpacks to low income children at two local schools in Madison, Alabama.  They are in need of items to fill these backpacks year round, and are very low on supplies to pack backpacks right now.  Here are a few examples of things they’re looking for:

  • Single Serving Cereals
  • Pop Top Pastas or Soups (i.e. Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup or Spaghettio’s)
  • Granola or Cereal Bars
  • Single Serve Fruit Cups

If you’re able, consider donating just an item or two this week to someone in need in your community ~  I promise it will make such a difference for them this Christmas season. And please (please!) don’t feel overwhelmed by the needs out there ~ I promise, if each of us do just a small part we really can have a huge impact.  If each person who visitst PPP throughout the month  of November donates just 2 items to charity, over 100,000 items would be donated this month alone ~ WOOHOOO!   So, consider exactly where God is calling you to give, and know that your generosity will bless someone this season.

Holiday Food Box Deals: Saving So We Can Give Abundantly

Holiday Food Box Deals

Believe it or not, Thanksgiving is right around the corner, which means it’s time to start looking for bargains on those Holiday Gift Boxes!  One of the biggest reason we do what we do on this site is to help you save abundantly for your own families and in turn give back to charity, so the season of giving is our favorite time of year . . . this is what it’s all about!

If you’re a local reader here in the Madison, Alabama area, our church (Asbury United Methodist) is preparing to stock Holiday food boxes.  The packing days are scheduled for November 3rd and November 17th, and we’ll keep you updated with additional information but wanted to give you an idea of what deals to watch for as you’re shopping!  Start watching the sales now, but definitely expect to see your best prices after Halloween . . . we should see deals on these items just about everywhere.  (Except for those free Betty Crocker Potatoes ~ go ahead and pick them up now!)

During the Holidays we’ll keep a Holiday Food Box Match Up list similar to Pantry 911, and hopefully we’ll all be able to save and give abundantly this season. If you’re unsure of where to give in your community, send us an email at contact@ passionatepenny pincher.com (leave out spaces) and we’ll help you find one. . . Happy Giving!

Advent Conspiracy: Pinch A Penny As You Give This Christmas Season 12/14/11

Our local church is encouraging us to focus this Holiday Season on something beyond our own family, and to give to those in need this CHRISTmas.  They are specifically encouraging us to give to two specific charities here in the North Alabama area:  the 8th Street Group Home and our local Prison Ministry, and to focus on a worldwide effort, the Advent Conspiracy.

To help your pennies stretch further as you give this Christmas, here’s a list of the best prices we could find on items that these programs are looking for requesting.  While you may be giving to other charities this Holiday season, I’m betting a few of the items listed will be things that you may need to find a deal on too!  Remember you can always find the best prices on donation deals this Christmas under the Holiday Food Box Tab at the top of the page.
