5 Ways To Save At The Movies + Win Free Movie Tickets!

Screen Shot 2016-03-18 at 9.34.30 AM

This post was sponsored by AMC Theatres and Coca-Cola. The opinions are completely my own and based on my experiences.

Do you love heading to the movies? Our family does too, but with a family of five a night out at the movies can get expensive, so we’re always looking for ways to save when we go.

Screen Shot 2016-03-17 at 5.59.05 PM

AMC theaters has a few fun offers going on right now though that definitely help you save, and after watching a movie at our local AMC this weekend I was hooked.

(Folks, have you gone to an AMC theater recently with fancy plush recliners? Oh my word, this AMC theater was the cushiest thing I’ve hung out at in ages!) 🙂

The AMC theater that we went to was f-a-n-c-y, and such a nice diversion from our family’s crazy work-school-weeks. It was a well-earned splurge for our bunch, and we took advantage of AMC’s special teen deal going on right now which definitely helped pinch a few extra pennies.

Screen Shot 2016-03-18 at 9.32.51 AM

So, looking for a few ways to save when you head to AMC too? Here you go:

1. Take advantage of AMC’s special Teen Deal.

If you have a teenager with a student ID, take advantage of AMC’s special teen deal where your student can get a popcorn AND coke for just $5 ~ the cost of just a coke regularly!

With two teenagers in our house this is a huge discount, and means my kids don’t have to share their popcorn and drinks. We went this weekend and the coupon was super simple to use, just download it here then use on your phone. Love that!

2.  Watch a matinee.

This one’s easy, and works great for our family. Skip the late night movies and head in the afternoon, and you’ll save up to $1.50 per person. For our family of 5 that’s $7.50 ~ totally worth it to get there early!

Screen Shot 2016-03-17 at 5.58.57 PM

3. Go on a weekday.

If you can, head to an AMC movie that starts before noon during the week (AMC often has 11:45 AM showings), and save a bundle. Save up to half off evening-priced tickets, which means as much as $5 per adult (and is great to take advantage of during Spring Break and summer vacation!)

4. Follow AMC on Facebook.

Occasionally AMC gives special offers to their Facebook fan pages, including bonus movies, special freebies, and more. Go HERE to see what they’re offering today.

5. Try out AMC Stubs.

If you go to the movies often, consider getting an AMC Stubs card which gives you free upgrades on popcorn and soda, a $10 reward for ever $100 you spend in concessions, and no online ticketing fees. The cost is $12 for one year, but occasionally AMC runs it for a discounted rate ~ definitely watch for that if you’re favorite thing to do on the weekend is head to the theater!

BONUS TIP

Take advantage of AMC Sensory Friendly Films.

Okay, this isn’t a deal, but I love that AMC offers this and thought you would do. If you have a family member with autism or other special needs, head to AMC during their Sensory Friendly Film showings and enjoy family friendly movies with the lights up and the sound turned down a bit. Love that!

40,000 Fitbit Step Goal at 40 & A Giveaway!

Screen Shot 2015-11-17 at 1.34.34 PM

Congratulations to ca..ye.d@aol.com for winning the giveaway! Thanks so much to everyone who entered ~ I so wish I could give one to all of you and loved reading your birthday stories. 🙂

Y’all might just think I’m nuts, but yesterday I turned forty (O.U.C.H.) and decided to celebrate by walking 40,000 steps using my Fitbit.

To be clear, that’s exactly 19.45 miles.

Yup.

More than I moved the day that I ran a half marathon a few years ago.

CRAZY.

I woke up yesterday at 4:50 AM (I’ve done that part for years ~ it’s what I have to do to force myself to exercise because otherwise I’d be a jillion pounds . . .), and set off to do my normal 10,000 step walk/run bright and early(Mostly so I could enjoy my birthday without worrying about calories!)

For a few months I’ve been trying to hit somewhere between 15,000 – 20,000 steps at least on weekdays, so that part wasn’t all that new to me.

Screen Shot 2015-11-17 at 1.34.55 PM

But as I was walking it occurred to me that I might just try being a little ridiculous and hitting a 40,000 mark goal to celebrate turning 40. Truthfully I’ve been a little sad about turning 40 ~ if I’m being honest, really a little more sad about turning 40 and still in the process of just getting to know people in Ohio so I didn’t have folks to celebrate with besides my family.

(People have been so sweet to me here, but working from home full time and keeping up with my family makes it hard to really get to know people all that often, which I thinks is true for work-at-home folks no matter where they are!)

But it dawned on me that I could turn my wee bit of sad into glad. 🙂 I am glad because God has given me two strong (albeit pudgy!) legs to walk on every day. I can walk wherever I want, whenever I want, and for some that alone is an incredible gift.

So I did the math, and realized that if I walked 3,000 steps every hour throughout the day I’d be pretty close to my goal by nighttime.

Every hour on the hour, I hopped up from my computer, turned on my favorite podcasts (right now I’m listening to a lot of Michael Hyatt and Chalene Johnson), and “walk/jogged” up and down our hallway upstairs to reach those 3,000 steps.

Screen Shot 2015-11-17 at 1.34.51 PM

I ended up averaging 3,000 steps in a little over twenty minutes each hour. Because I’ve had a huge bout with plantar fascitis since running my half a year and a half ago, I wore my favorite Adidas Adissage sandals throughout the day. (These sandals have helped my feet a ton ~ I highly recommend them if you struggle with constant heel pain!)

Then I asked my sweet husband and kids to head to the mall with me after dinner last night, and we walked until I hit my 40,000 steps ~ then celebrated with a Cinnabon. (I haven’t had one in years and it sounded so good – honestly now though I think our homemade Cinnabons are way better, and my kids agree but it was still a fun treat!)

Screen Shot 2015-11-17 at 1.35.46 PM

So, I made it! As a person who’s glued way too closely to her computer throughout the day I’ve loved the motivation of my Fitbit (and especially Fitbit groups), to really encourage me to get up and move around a bit more throughout the day.

fitbit

I’d love for one of you to have that motivation too, so decided to celebrate we should do a giveaway! I’m giving away one Fitbit HR (the same one I have which is also on sale right now at Ebay) to one lucky reader. Here’s how to enter to win:

The giveaway will close 11/19/15 at 9:00 PM, so be sure to enter to win ~ good luck!

Just so you know, what made the day even sweeter was that I was so fortunate to have a ton of sweet phone calls, messages, and emails from friends all over the place who took time to just wish me a happy day. I am crazy (CRAZY) blessed.

So thankful for a crazy blessed life, no matter what the next forty bring! 🙂

(And seriously debating making this an annual tradition . . . 50K steps at 50? 60K steps at 60? And making my kids push me when I get to 90 just a mere 90K steps.) We’ll see!) 🙂

Amazon Gift Card Giveaway + 12 things you probably don’t know about me (I’d love to hear about you too!)

amazon

Thanks SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERED – I absolutely *loved* reading all about you and wish I had time to comment to each one of you specifically! Here are the winners (have all been contacted via email:)

  • Ajsamp….. 23@yahoo.com
  • sd…30@gmail.com
  • Nik…..13@yahoo.com
  • range….s@yahoo.com

You guys.

I’m so stinkin’ excited because we’ve hit 250,000 fans on Facebook. (I actually meant to post this at 250,000, but we’re already up to 260,00 as of today!!!!)

Wow.

To say I’m just amazed is an understatement.

As I’ve shared a time or two before, I’m just a plain ole’ mom who loves to pinch a penny, and having 250,000 260,000 folks join me along the way is pure craziness.

To thank you for hanging out with me each day, I thought it would be fun to do an Amazon gift card giveaway. 😉 I’ll be giving away 4 $50 Amazon gift cards, and all you have to do to enter to win is share a few facts about yourself (because I really do love hearing from you!)

Screen Shot 2015-02-19 at 5.08.51 AM

To get things started, I’ll share a few things about myself (yikes!) Then just leave a comment on this post to share a fact or two about yourself, and you’ll be entered to win (YAY!) Here we go . . .

1. I grew up in Clearwater, Florida. When I went to college at Asbury University in Kentucky, I swore that if I never saw another palm tree as long as I lived that would be just fine. (20 years later after freezing all winter in Ohio, I think I’d give anything to see a palm tree . . . .)

2. I started playing the violin when I was 8 and it’s probably my favorite past time, although I only pick it up a few times a year. I taught private violin lessons to earn extra income when my kids were small. (I also did some data entry and taught preschool – anything to make a few extra bucks!)

3. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology. I was a social work major at Asbury before transferring to University of Louisville my senior year of college. (After getting married and realizing we really couldn’t afford another year of private college!) Since U of L didn’t have social work as an undergrad program I changed to psychology.

I always knew I wanted to work in a field where I helped people, so the mission of this site has been a crazy blessing to me. I tell my husband that I’m only legitimately qualified to work at McDonald’s, so hopefully this gig won’t be up too soon. 🙂

4. I type really fast. The only class I’ve ever taken that has had any real value was my typing class with Mrs. Stewart in high school, where I even won a state typing competition. I use that skill every. single. day.

2011 at the Alabama Governor’s Ball – the only time I’ve every worn a formal dress other than my wedding. 😉 I think I was at my absolute thinnest there which is about 12 pounds lighter than where I am right now, so I’m determined to get there in the next few months!

5. I lost 70 pounds in college and have kept it off for almost 20 years. I still see myself as the pudgy girl (have always wanted to lose another 10-20 pounds), and my weight is a daily battle for me. I exercise at least 4-5 times per week, but chocolate chip cookies are my arch nemesis.

‘nuf said.

jamesandlaurie

6. I married the first (and only) boy I’ve ever kissed.

Wouldn’t change a thing

(Seriously, he’s the best gift to me and we have three super cute kids. I only dreamed I’d have all this!)

7. After living in Goshen, Kentucky (outside of Louisville) for ten years, my husband and I moved to Madison, Alabama and were there for 10 years as well. We moved to Ohio in May of 2014 and I’m still having some growing pains (but trusting it’ll be home soon. I sure hope!)

Screen Shot 2015-08-06 at 8.24.01 AM

8. I’m not naturally a giver. My husband and other folks in my family are honest to goodness natural givers, and I so wish I had that trait. Because I grew up in a home where finances were always tight, I fear never having enough probably more than most people, and work really hard to overcome this one.

9. I have amazing help here on PPP. Shannon is my biggest assistant (she’s amazing and cares about each one of you so very much!) There are also a few other gals that work behind the scenes who make everything here on PPP possible. I could never (ever, never!) run this site on my own, and am so stinkin’ thankful for them.

rsz_sweetcaroline (1)

10. I’m a Jesus girl. 🙂 My girls crack me up because this is kind of the way they describe other girls when they talk about them at home, and I’m so glad to be raising a few Jesus girls (and one Jesus boy) of my own. This means we’re so far from perfect, and only by His grace anything good comes from the mess that we are. I became a Christian at 9 years old, and some days am overwhelmed by the way He’s taken care of this mess of me.

Screen Shot 2015-08-06 at 8.25.03 AM

11. My brain never stops going. I constantly am thinking of things to do, struggle with wishing I could live without sleep because there are so many fun things I’d love to work on, and if anyone else lived inside this head of mine I’m pretty sure they’d jump out of their skin. (My brain seriously goes a million miles a minute every second of the day – it’s ridiculous and probably some crazy form of ADD!) 😉 Thankfully somehow it works for me, but goodness, it’s nuts.

12. The growth of this website seriously overwhelms and humbles me every single day. I really am just a girl who loves to clip coupons, and didn’t know a single thing about computers, marketing, writing, or social media until starting this site 5 years ago. (Thank heavens for google – it’s taught me everything I know!)

I seriously am in shock every day when you all come hang out with me (I wake up every morning even after 5 years thinking it probably won’t last another day), and feel crazy blessed by the growth of this site.

Craziness I tell ya’!

So, there you have it!

Your turn now ~ I’d love to hear a few fun facts about you, because goodness I know y’all have some stories too! Take a minute to leave a comment to share and I’ll enter to win a $50 Amazon gift card. I love love love hearing from you!

NOTE: If you normally comment via Facebook, please click HERE to comment so that I can have your email in case you win ~ there’s no way for me to contact you otherwise if you win. 🙂

Thanks so much for reading PPP ~ I appreciate you each so very much. 😉

Get A Kitchenaid Mixer Like Me Giveaway!

IMG_0208.JPG

Congratulations to Hollho….7@comcast.net for winning ~ and thanks so much to everyone who entered (I wish I could buy each one of you a Kitchenaid!)

Isn’t she lovely?

So, I have a confession to make.

I have absolutely no self control and bought that Kitchenaid MixerThe one that I didn’t need.

Yup. No. self. con. trol.

I stayed up last night dreaming of this thing, and when a PPP’er on Facebook mentioned the even better deal at Bed Bath & Beyond, I was totally suckered in and headed out to buy that beautiful mixer.

(Both the Bed Bath & Beyond deal and Amazon deal are INCREDIBLE prices ~ you’ll save more than 50% off the original price on this beauty!)

IMG_0204.JPG

I have so little control that I couldn’t even wait to have my husband wrap it and give it to me as a Christmas gift. I thought it through, and seeing as I probably have right around sixty five Christmas baking seasons in my future (assuming I live to the ripe age of 104 ~ I have an aunt who’s 101, so it’s clearly possible, I think?) I decided that I needed to go ahead and use it now though so I wouldn’t miss a single opportunity. 😉

I have some guilt about this purchase (although honestly, I love it. And my husband was sweet enough to approve.) I already have a Kitchenaid that works just fine other than being a wee bit smaller, and I know there are so so so many people who have so little. (So why on earth do I need a bigger Kitchenaid?)  Splurging for myself on this just seems beyond ridiculous, but goodness I do love it already. (Is that terrible? I struggle so much with when it’s okay to splurge and when to give more!)

Screen Shot 2014-12-12 at 5.09.10 PM

 (Best Ever Chocolate Cookie Recipe)

So, to ease my guilt just a bit, I decided to share exactly the same Kitchenaid with one of you. (WOOOHOOOOO!)

Tomorrow night at 10 PM Eastern Time, I’ll pick one ever-so-lucky PPP reader to get this just so beautiful-wonderful-make-me-so-happy mixer so you can feel just a wee bit like Martha Stewart too. (Or Paula Deen. Whoever you choose.) 😉

PPP Five Year Blogiversary Giveaway Coming Tomorrow

Screen Shot 2014-10-06 at 2.43.35 PM

First giveaway is live – enter to win HERE!

Goodness gracious, I can hardly believe this but I’ve been typing from this side of the screen and on over to you for exactly five years this month.  WOW!

What I completely started on a whim turned into something I never would have imagined, and I can hardly believe I’m still hanging out here with you each day. In case you haven’t figured this out (~ahem~), I’m just a mom. I don’t have any degrees in marketing, advertising, or journalism . . . in fact, I’m in sheer amazement each day that so many folks take time to read what’s here on PPP.  (It’s all I can do just to keep this technologically-challenged brain on top of things most days!)

Blogging has changed my life so much these last five years that I can hardly imagine life without it.  It’s given this kind-of-shy-goofy-not-very-confident mom a little presence on the internet, taught me so much about what I’m really passionate about, instilled in me the importance of some serious determination, and been just a wonderful gift (despite the ridiculous number of hours it’s taken to keep it together. Yikes!)

I looked back to my very first post back in October of 2009 on “publixpennypincher.blogspot.com” (when I made myself “pretend post” for a few weeks to see if I even enjoyed sharing deals at all.) Here’s what it looked like . . . 😉

Screen Shot 2014-10-06 at 2.49.03 PM

(seriously folks, we’ve come a long way ~ it took me a whopping six months just to learn how to hyperlink!)

I feel so incredibly blessed to have this virtual home here with you, and am simply overwhelmed that you take time to read what’s here each day. I love how this has completely changed our family’s ability to give as well as beefed up our children’s college funds, and having you all to chat with each day has helped me through some crazy difficult times.

(I know that sounds nuts, but you all are just the nicest cheering section!)

Screen Shot 2014-10-06 at 3.34.30 PM

To top that all off, last week we reached ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND FACEBOOK FANS (WOW!) So, of course we need a little giveaway to celebrate, don’t you think? 😉

Screen Shot 2014-10-06 at 3.37.57 PM

Tomorrow, watch for some seriously fun giveaways (hint: think Kitchenaid & Amazon ~ both!) I’ll be starting out early in the day and can’t wait to share, so be watching.

Thank you so much for sharing this little spot with me each day – I’m so very thankful for you!

And on a very important side note, I do NOT do manage all of this by myself most days. A big thanks to my friends Cheryl, Misty, Susan and Staci who help out with various tasks around here when I need them, and a HUGE thanks to Shannon (who y’all know is a rockstar.) 😉

Dave Ramsey Total Money Makeover Giveaway #4: Five Readers Win

I’m so excited to share this last Total Money Makeover giveaway with you this week! I’ve got FIVE more copies of The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness by Dave Ramsey to share with five more lucky readers, and know that reading this book can help shape your financial future.

It’s so easy to get overwhelmed by our finances and feel like we don’t have power over our income. And unfortunately, it’s not nearly as easy to step back and determine to take control of what money we do have. My prayer for you is that you will find peace in the midst of whatever financial situation you’re in today. . . and be encouraged with hope for the future.

As I mentioned earlier this month, our family has followed the principles in Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace Class for ten years, and I know of another method that so easily explains how to take control of your finances.  We’ve been encouraged and empowered to live differently even when it’s not easy, and are slow reaching our long term financial goals. We’re finally in a place where our family really does feel confident in our financial future, and I want you to find that for your own family. (I wish I could express just how good that feels, but you’ve gotta do it yourself to get there!)

So, would you like to win a copy? 😉 Here’s how to enter to win:

This week’s giveaway will end 4/29/13 at 9 PM Central Time, however they’ll be one more opportunity to win next week as we take control of our finances.

Disclosure:  This giveaway was provided by Dave Ramsey, however I have not been endorsed in any other way to share the giveaway.  All opinions are (of course!) my own.

Dave Ramsey Giveaway #2: Five Readers Win A Copy Of The Total Money Makeover

Update: the winners of this week’s giveaway are:

bluey….00@aol.com
Sahm….r@gmail.com
fsum…..3@yahoo.com
dlat….y@gmail.com
ifsm…@me.com

All winners have been sent an email. Thanks to everyone who entered, and don’t forget we’ll have another giveaway next Thursday!

I’m so excited to share this giveaway again this week! Each Thursday in April, I’ll have FIVE copies of The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness by Dave Ramsey to share with five lucky readers, and know that this book can help change your financial future.

As I shared last week, our family has been following the outline of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace Classes for ten years, and love the impact it has made on our family and our finances.  It has helped us choose to live differently even when it’s not easy, and continue towards our long term financial goals.

I know it’s easy to get excited about saving money, penny pinching, and even budgeting, and then give up when the road gets harder than we expect.  You may have started out 2013 with big goals of changing how your money was spent this year, but already become overwhelmed by your financial burdens. If that’s the place that you’re in today, than this book and giveaway is for you.

I want you to find financial peace and freedom too.

I have no idea where your finances are today, but if you’re unsure of how to gain control, The Total Money Makeover will motivate you to take the steps needed and determine your future.  We really do have the power to detemine how we spend our money each week, and this book will challenge you to make disciplined financial decisions, and your financial future will be changed.

So, would you like to win a copy? 😉 Here’s how to enter to win:

This week’s giveaway will end 4/15/13 at 9 PM Central Time, however they’ll be more opportunities to win throughout the month of April as we take control of our finances.

Disclosure:  This giveaway was provided by Dave Ramsey, however I have not been endorsed in any other way to share the giveaway.  All opinions are (of course!) my own.

Spring Cleaning Challenge Day One: The Kitchen

Okie dokie guys . . . here’s to day one of our Spring Cleaning Challenge!  It’s absolutely beautiful today here in Alabama, and I want my home to feel as clean and fresh inside as the weather is outside.  These challenges may take a few minutes more than five minutes, but I promise it will feel so good to have it done!

Today we’ll start in the kitchen:

  1. Thoroughly clean off all kitchen coutertops.  If you have paperwork that needs to be dealt with (I did!), put it in a pile and map out a time today to go through it.  Move any appliances, cookbooks, or anything else on your counters and give them a good scrubbing underneath your “stuff”.
  2. Wipe down any canisters and kitchen appliances on your countertops.
  3. Take a good look at any decorations & appliances on your counters, and decide if you need them and if they’re in the best spot.  While I didn’t do much re-arranging this morning, I did see a few items that weren’t where they needed to be, and it made my kitchen feel so much better with just a few changes!
  4. Do a good cleanup of the table, chairs, and/or barstools in your kitchen.  I love my kiddos, but the gunk they leave underneath them each day is unbelievable!  Get rid of all the crusties (bleck!), wipe down all the hard surfaces with hot soapy water, and get everything cleaned up.
Whew . . . that’s it for today!  When you’re finished, come on back and leave a comment on this post and I’ll add you to the Spring Cleaning Challenge $50 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway.  (It’ll feel so good, and you might even win a little moo-lah!)

Also, if you have any other great tips on what to clean I’d love to hear them (I think we’ll spend this week in the kitchen and move to the rest of the house in the upcoming weeks!)

Hurst Family Harvest Giveaway: $25 Publix Gift Card + Beans!

Update:  Congratulations to Christina at chrisly…@yahoo.com for winning the giveaway! Comments on this post are now closed.

Have you tried cooking with dried beans before?  Until last fall when Hurst Family Harvest offered me a chance to try out their beans, I had never cooked using dried beans before. (Gasp!)  I thought it might take more effort than I was up to, and couldn’t imagine those dry beans would ever actually cook!

But guess what? They’re so easy to use, and a great inexpensive way to provide a delicious warm meal for your family on a busy weeknight.  Just pour them in a pot and cover with a few inches of water, then let them soak overnight (or 4-6 hours during the day.)  Once they’ve soaked, you can slow cook them (my favorite way to use them . . .) or cook them on the stove top for about an hour!  A package of Hurst Family Harvest Beans with seasonings costs around $1.99 at the grocery store, and will feed eight people when you add a few additional  ingredients, so it’s a wonderful way to feed your family well on a budget!

Our version of Hurst White Bean Chicken Chili . . . absolutely delicious!

Hurst Family Harvest would like to give away a $25 Publix Gift Card to one lucky reader as well as a few packages of beans for you to try out, so that you can create a few yummy meals for your family!  Here’s how to enter the giveaway:

  1. Required Entry:  Visit Hurst Family Beans Website and share which type of beans you’d like to try out in your family (then leave a comment here letting me know.)
  2. Additional Entries:  Like Hurst Family Harvest on Facebook.
  3. Join Passionate Penny Pincher on Facebook and leave a comment to let me know (or leave a comment if you’re already a Facebook fan.)
  4. Subscribe to free Passionate Penny Pincher daily emails (or leave a comment if you’re already an email subscriber.)

Giveaway will end Monday, 2/20/11 at 9:00 AM.  Good luck!

Disclosure:  Hurst Family Harvest provided me with a variety of bags to review, as well as a $25 Publix Gift Card, however all opinions are my own. (This chili was amazing, and I can’t wait to share our the new recipe for Beans & Cornbread that we tried out this weekend on Wednesday!)

Five PPP Readers Win Swiffer Dusters! (+ What Swiffer’s Doing To Help Some Special Folks In Our Community)

I’m always excited to share a new giveaway with you, but this one might just be my favorite giveaway yet!  I recently shared how much I fell in love with the 360 Swiffer Duster after receiving a free sample through Swiffer’s Facebook page. (Sorry guys, the free samples are no longer available, but hopefully a few of you got them too!)  I sent my post over to the fabulous folks at Swiffer (because I thought they might enjoy seeing how much we all love them . . ), and they’ve offered five Swiffer 360 Dusters to give away to Passionate Penny Pincher readers!  (Pretty exciting, right?)

But it gets better (wayyyyyy better!):  when I contacted Swiffer I asked if they might consider donating a few Swiffer products to 305 8th Street, a local group home here in Huntsville Alabama that cares for eighteen mentally challenged adults.  Guess what??!!! (You’re not gonna believe this . . . at least I hardly did!) Swiffer is donating FIFTY Swiffer products to 8th Street Group Home . . . WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!  (Can you tell I’m just a wee bit excited?)

After sharing my excitement with Andrea who runs the program, she told me that 305 8th Street is just about to have a little re-construction work completed on the sixty-three year old home.  As you can imagine, a lot of dust will be flying, and of course those Swiffer products are just what they’ll need to keep those dust bunnies at bay for the eighteen sweet residents who live there.

I really can’t begin to share how impressed I am with Swiffer and Proctor & Gamble for their generosity, but since you guys have some incredibly (com)passionately-penny-pinched hearts, I know you understand.  Not only is Swiffer a company who has created an incredible product that I absolutely love (those Swiffer dusters are simply amazing for cleaning out blinds. . .amazing!), they’re also willing to share with those in need.  So  I’ll always have Swiffer Dusters on hand at my house, even if I can’t find a coupon for them . . and you know that’s saying something!

Would you like to win one of those awesome Swiffer 360 Dusters?  (You know you would!) Here are several different ways to win:

  1. Leave a comment sharing which room in your home needs a Swiffer 360 Duster the most (I’m afraid mine might just be the entire house . . . yikes!)
  2. Like Swiffer on Facebook and leave a comment to let me know
  3. Join Passionate Penny Pincher on Facebook and leave a comment to let me know (or just leave a comment if you’re already a Facebook fan.)
  4. Subscribe to Passionate Penny Pincher by email (or leave a comment if you already subscribe.)
Giveaway will end Saturday, 2/11/12 at 8 PM.

On a sidenote, if you’d like to make a donation directly to 305 8th Street or learn more about their mission, check them out over HERE.  I re-watched their videos last night and was moved to tears watching the work that they do each day.  If you’re in the North Alabama area, they always accept donations of canned foods, toiletries, and cleaning supplies, which can be dropped off directly at 305 8th Street.

Disclosure:  Swiffer is providing five Swiffer 360 Dusters to give away, as well as fifty to give to 305 8th Street.  All opinions are (of course!) my own. (I absolutely love my Swiffer and it’s quickly become my favorite cleaning tool to use each day!)

Book Review & Giveaway: The Money Saving Mom’s Budget

I really didn’t mean for this post to go on quite so long but here goes . . . go ahead and grab a cup of coffee and curl up for a few minutes!

As many of you know, I’ve always been a frugal girl at heart, but started seriously using coupons about five years ago before my youngest was born.  My best friend Nancy called me up one day, told me that she’d saved over $100 at the grocery store, and that she was reading some blog that helped her understand how to do it.

“Hmpphhh,” I thought.  Because I’d always been a penny pincher and tried using coupons early in our marriage, I was pretty aware that coupons could save you a little money at the grocery store, but inevitably every time I tried using them, I found it cheaper to buy the store brand product than it was to use that coupon.  So I really couldn’t believe that some little coupon blog could make a difference. 😉 Yup, you can guess where this one’s going . . .

I trusted Nancy’s judgement though, and decided to give it a shot.  (Let me tell you, spending that first $1.50 on the newspaper just about killed this penny-pinchin’ momma!)  But, I forked over those pennies for the paper, went to CVS, did my first crazy coupon deal, and was hooked.  I followed the advice of that coupon blogger (I really kinda liked her . . . ), and do you know what?  For the first time ever, using coupons made sense.  And I was beside myself as I skipped out of CVS with my loot.

Fast forward five years. . .

If anyone would have told me then that Money Saving Mom (who I feel is the best money saving blogger out there . . .) would let me review her book, to share on my coupon blog (who knew?), I would have said there was no way.  (In fact, I’ve sent and received a few emails from Crystal and totally feel like a rock star whenever I see her name in my inbox!)  But here I am; and guess what?  I loved her book.

Crystal is so down to earth, giving basic practical advice on how to pare down your spending, cut your expenses, and reduce debt to make real changes in your financial future.  Because our family is out of debt except for our home, and because I’ve obviously followed Crystal for awhile, I kind of felt there wouldn’t be much for me in the book.  Boy was I wrong.

The first few chapters in The Money Saving Mom’s Budget talk about de-cluttering, scaling back, and taking charge of your home so that you make everything work better for you.  My favorite recommendation was to take an entire day twice a year to de-clutter your home from top to bottom.  (Brilliant!)  While I try to keep our home tidy, I don’t think I’d yet connected how often clutter in our home causes us to over-spend on things we simply don’t need.  (Anyone else ever cleaned out their children’s closets and realized there’s just no way your children need even one more stitch of clothing?)  Over the holidays, I took about a week to de-clutter *most* of our home thanks to Crystal’s advice, and it has brought so much peace to our home.

More importantly though, in the end of the book Crystal discusses the importance of feeling contentment no matter your circumstances, which was just what I needed to hear.  It’s so easy in a world where we’re encouraged to keep up with others to feel that we never have enough, despite the incredible blessings that surround us.  I struggle personally so very often feeling I’m not “cute” enough, “smart” enough, that I don’t have exactly the right “stuff”, and even that my kiddos don’t wear exactly the right clothing. I find myself all too often in a competition which I’m never going to win.  (Isn’t it just nuts that we do that to ourselves?)  Crystal’s gentle exhortation to seek contentment right where we are was an amazing reminder to me, and as I looked around my cozy home where we have warm baths, running water, plus a dishwasher and laundry machine (thank goodness!), I was again reminded that I simply have nothing to complain about.

The Money Saving Mom’s Budget just released today, and I highly recommend ordering your copy.  While it’s a fantastic book on it’s own, here’s the most exciting part:  Crystal and her husband are donating 100% of the proceeds to Compassion International, so when you order yours, 100% of the proceeds from the book will go to support mission work in the Dominican Republic.  (How amazing is that?)  As many of you know, much of the reason  that I started Passionate Penny Pincher was to support mission work, so watching how God has amazingly allowed Crystal to give back in such an incredible way encourages me to work harder and give more abundantly.

Would you like to win a free copy of the The Money Saving Mom’s BudgetLeave a comment on this post only sharing what your number one financial goal is right now, and I’ll choose three winners on 1/14/12 to win. Good luck, and you can take a peak at the book over HERE.

Disclosure:  Money Saving Mom provided me with a book to review, however all opinions are my own.  I truly think so highly of Crystal and her mission, and had already pre-ordered a copy of the book before receiving my copy to review.

This giveaway has now ended and comments are closed.  Thanks so much to everyone who entered!
