How Does Your Grocery Budget Look?

It's been awhile since I asked this, so I thought it was time to get a check-up on how folks are doing at the grocery store!  When asking how folks have saved over on the PPP Facebook page, I typically get responses with anywhere from 10-75% savings (I can't believe how much they vary!)  I want to encourage you that wherever you are in your grocery budget, just making small changes over the long run will make a huge difference.

With a lot of folks watching Extreme Couponing it's easy to feel like we need to save the crazy amounts portrayed on TV, but I just don't believe that's realistic in our every day grocery budgets (although it sure would be fun to have one or two trips like that!)  However, I've found that saving over the long haul has made such a difference in our family, and while getting 99% savings on a coupon trip isn't realistic for me, I'm pretty content with saving 75% on each grocery trip for the last six years.  (Yup, I'm just fine with that!)

Here are a few questions that I'd love to hear your responses to, because I think it's interesting to hear how you all are doing!  (I'll answer them too . . .)

  • What state do you live in? Alabama
  • Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
  • What stores do you normally shop at? Publix, sometimes the drug stores but not often!
  • What is your average grocery savings? 70-80%
  • If you don't mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? $60-$65, but closer to $65 most weeks (that boy of mine is growing!) 🙂
  • How many people are in your family? Five total – including 3 children ages 4-11
  • What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget?  I consistently struggle to find a deal on is meat (specifically ground beef and steak!), as well as fresh produce.  My goal is to save on every other item at the grocery store, so that I can cover the cost of those items!

Your turn now!  Are you seeing big savings at the grocery stores?  Are you frustrated with couponing or loving every minute of it?  I'd love to hear your comments if you have a minute to share . . . and to let you know that this coupon thing really does work, and if I can do it, anyone can do it!  (It's not rocket science, I promise!)

What is your average grocery savings? 50 to 70%

How many people are in your family? 4 (inc. one in diapers)
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Meats and Produce. This is the main reason for raising our budget, I kept finding myself skipping out on fresh produce.
And then add in the fact everything is getting more expensive!

    • Everything is DEFINITELY getting more expensive. I hope it slows down soon! You’re doing great, especially with one in diapers (so glad we’re no longer buying those!)

  5. What state do you live in? Alabama
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
What stores do you normally shop at? Publix, and CVS, Rite Aid if they have a good sales week, as they are so close to the Publix where I shop.
What is your average grocery savings? 50 to 75%
Iwhat is your weekly grocery budget? $50 to 60
How many people are in your family? 3 adults
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? I consistently struggle to find a deal on is meat (specifically ground beef and steak!), as well as fresh produce. My goal is to save on every other item at the grocery store, so that I can cover the cost of those items! DITTO to your answer. Finding quality meats at a good price is hard. I am able every now and then to get some good buys at Rocket City Meats in Huntsville.

  6. * What state do you live in? California
    * Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? No
    * What stores do you normally shop at? Safeway and Trader Joe’s, occasionally hitting Costco, Big Lots, CVS or Target
    * What is your average grocery savings? 60% at Safeway. TJ’s doesn’t do sales, and has few items that take coupons, but the prices are generally 25% less than the non-sale price of the same kind of item at Safeway.
    * If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? $75, plus $25 every two weeks for a CSA box. We’re usually close to this, but I allow overage and make it up over time. If there’s a meat special, I might spend $100, and then spend $65 the next week, $65 the week after, and $70 the week after that to balance out. Costco runs always mean a tight budget for the next few weeks.
    * How many people are in your family? Three, me, my husband, and our baby, but every week we serve a three course meal for two to four friends. We also rarely eat out, and don’t buy lunch at work, so our budget covers the vast majority of our meals.
    * What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Convenience foods and ‘treats’. I can usually get good deals on snacks and the basics, and we’re good enough cooks to make scratch meals that are tasty. But we don’t always want to cook or clean up the mess from cooking, or juggle the baby while cooking. So I like to pick up foods that are tasty, not full of junk, and really fast to make. That usually means either the pricey organic brands, or TJs food, so just three or four meals can blow the budget if I’m not careful. I also like to make sure we have a lot of treats to keep up our morale, whether that means cookies, extra fruit, a jar of fancy salsa, a new spice for the cabinet. These also can add up fast.

I try to make sure we pay very little for our basics, and that our meal we cook for friends makes use of whatever is on sale that week, which gives me leftovers for our treats or to supplement our hosting. My general rule is spend $50 of our food budget wisely, and $25 pleasurably.

  7. ■What state do you live in? Colorado
■Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes (up to $1- so anything up to 50 cents doubles, anything from 50 to 99 cents = a dollar.
■What stores do you normally shop at? Kroeger
■What is your average grocery savings? 50-60%
■If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? $75-100
■How many people are in your family? Five total – 3 + one on the way
■What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? I buy very little processed foods and try to buy only “All Natural” or Organic when I can.

    • You’re doing great to stay at that price with natural & organic foods. Those can be such budget busters! (BTW, we’re heading to CO for Spring Break… hoping you guys will have some snow for us to see!)

  8. What state do you live in? Franklin, TN
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
What stores do you normally shop at? Publix, Harris Teeter
What is your average grocery savings? 60%
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? $50, but I try to stay under
How many people are in your family? 2 – We’re newlyweds 🙂
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? We live in an expensive suburb of Nashville, so everything seems more expensive than our sweet home state of AL. Our biggest weakness is eating out. It blows our “food” budget if we are not very careful.

    • My sister-in-law is in Nolensville Jill, and it definitely is higher there – plus your sales tax is CRAZY! Hang in there … you’re doing fantastic!

  9. What state do you live in? Alabama
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
What stores do you normally shop at? Publix, Kroger and Aldi. Maybe one of the pharmacies if the price is right.
What is your average savings? 50-70%
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? Right now it isn’t set in stone, I have been trying to build up a small stockpile. It’s tons lower already and we have plenty in the house. If I find a great price, I’ll buy a lot. (When whole chickens were .69/lb. at Aldi, I bought 4.)
How many people are in your family? Two of us are at home. The boys are at college. But I buy quite a bit for them. After Christmas, Alex went back with 2 coolers, half a dozen paper bags, and still forgot some here!
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Personal care products. I’ve been able to find good prices on ground beef and chicken, and fresh produce is always on the menu, so I just try to buy things on sale.
There is still a ways to go, but I already see lower bills! Thanks for helping me out.

  10. What state do you live in? Florida
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Unfortunately, none around here do.
What stores do you normally shop at? Super Target, Publix, Winn Dixie, and Walgreens
What is your average grocery savings? 60-70%
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? $37.5 ($150 a month)
How many people are in your family? Two (just hubby and I for now :))
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Definitely produce, peanut butter and eggs. We run and work out a lot but eat a mainly vegetarian diet with little red meat. This really helps out on grocery bills, but we also eat tons of fruits and veggies, eggs, and use protein powder and tons of peanut butter to make homemade protein bars. Peanut butter has gotten so expensive, and my hubby can eat 2-3 protein bars a day, and I use a regular size jar for each batch!

  11. i suppose i am doing good then feeding a family of 5 (one still BFing though) on less than 100 bi-weekly-including household items? diapers once a month for 2 cost me (in bulk) 80$?

What state do you live in? Alabama
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
What stores do you normally shop at? Publix, Kroger, Amazon/Diapers.com (for diapers)
What is your average grocery savings? 70-80%
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? 50-60 (mine is bi-weekly so 100-110)
How many people are in your family? 5; two adults, 6yr, 3yr, and 20 wk old boys
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Meat, produce, baby/diaper items

  12. What state do you live in? Alabama
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
What stores do you normally shop at? Publix, CVS and Rite Aid
What is your average grocery savings? I just started keeping track last month. January’s savings was 37%.
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? $65
How many people are in your family? Five total – including 3 children ages 9 months, 6 and 9
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? diapers and formula

  13. What state do you live in? Alabama
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
What stores do you normally shop at? Publix 90% of the time…I’ll hit Griners for meat specials & occasionally Kroger
What is your average grocery savings? 55%-75%
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? I shoot for $65/week, but I will admit I am not too hesitant to go over if I come across a super deal ! 😉
How many people are in your family? 4 -me , my husband & boys age 10 & 8
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? The fact that my oldest son has severe food allergies – to milk & beef (and peanuts, but that really change the way we have to eat so much) and some of the alternative products that I buy for him are not the items you are going to see BOGO at Publix & don’t have coupons readily available (ie – the only kind of milk-free chocolate chips he can have are $5 a bag , the milk-free cheese is $5 for 10 slices & each cup of dairy free yogurt is $1.25 a cup) !

  14. What state do you live in? California
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? No, none in my area do this. Not an option : (
What stores do you normally shop at? Winco, Target, CVS, Costco
What is your average grocery savings? Math is not my thing and I’ve only been coupling since August. I haven’t sat down to figure out my savings. I just know I get a lot more for my money and my stockpile is slowly growing.
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? I do my major grocery shopping every two weeks and spend about $200 on average but that includes food and all toiletries and household items.
How many people are in your family? Five total – including 3 children ages 2, 9 and 11 (all girls) + 1 dog.
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Probably not being able to resist the awesome deals at CVS or Target and spending money on what we don’t really need at the time but just getting it because it is such a good deal. (We have a lot of toothpaste right now!) Also, like everyone else, milk, meat and produce.

  15. What state do you live in? Alabama
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
What stores do you normally shop at? Publix, Kroger, Sam’s Club
What is your average grocery savings? 40-60% depending on how much prep time I have
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? Around $600
How many people are in your family? 7 total 2 adults + 5 kids (3 eat like adults though)
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Produce and meat – I go back and forth between trying to be healthier (less preservative-filled foods) and budget-minded. I have a hard time doing both.

  16. What state do you live in? Alabama
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
What stores do you normally shop at? Publix and walmart, sometimes Kroger for 1 or 2 items.
What is your average grocery savings? 50%
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? $80-$100
How many people are in your family? Four, 2 boys, 2 adults.
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Fresh Produce and milk. We go through three gallons of milk a week and we like to eat healthy items like fruit and vegetables – although, we aren’t picky so I usually just buy whatever is on sale that week. I am also still in the “stocking phase” of my couponing experience so one of my biggest weaknesses is stocking up on items simply because I have never seen them so cheap before and have no idea when they will go on sale again. 🙂 I really need to start “eating out of our pantry” soon and then maybe our average bill will go down a bit.

  17. Hello Folks.
I’m really enjoying reading everyone’s responses.

What state do you live in? Southeast Florida, Palm Beach County
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? None. (None in this part of Florida.)
What stores do you normally shop at? Publix. Occasionally Whole Foods, CVS and Walgreen’s.
What is your average grocery savings? 70-80% PLUS I’ve been able stockpile a freezser full, and tons of staples, personal and health care items, cereals, pasta & sauces, cleaning and bathroom supplies, and more vitamins then we can use before expiration (sharing with family and friends). I’m so grateful. It truly is a blessing.
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? $30 – $35
How many people are in your family? 2 adults (hubby and wifey).
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? While not everything we manage to buy is organic or eco friendly, we try to get these types of products whenever possible, even if the trade off is “treat” food or getting smaller quantities or less for stockpile. The higher food prices go, my guess is the lower the quality of food ingredients will go. I’m a major label reader and find myself ignoring so many bargains because of ingredients that concern me. It’s a juggle, but we manage.

  18. What state do you live in? Colorado
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes, King Soopers (Kroger affiliate)
What stores do you normally shop at? King Soopers, Commissary, Walmart, Costco, and Walgreens
What is your average grocery savings? King Soopers is the best for this, anywhere from 30-50% when
they are having a really good sale.
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? I haven’t broken it down by the week but
monthly we try to stay under $500, including Costco, bread store, and all toiletries/laundry stuff. I’m
getting better now that my stockpile has grown.
How many people are in your family? Hubby and I fulltime, three teens part-time, two of them growing
    boys!
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Meat and produce prices!
Apparently there’s a hay shortage here in Colorado (and other states possibly) which has caused
beef to increase by over $1 per pound. It’s now almost cheaper to buy lean ground turkey than lean
ground beef. Also, I’m still learning the kids’ likes/dislikes and having two boys that want to eat
triple the amount I do makes meal planning is a little tough at this point, but we’re getting there.

  19. Bergen Daisy Smith says

What state do you live in? Nevada (I had to chime in and represent!)
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Only one, but they are HIGH priced
What stores do you normally shop at? Smiths and Raleys are closest to me….we live 20 miles out of town so my shopping has changed a lot since our move!.
What is your average grocery savings? I would guess 40%-60% using sales AND coupons
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? I don’t really have a weekly budget (I know…gasp!) But I will say that I just spent $72 at Smiths today and I felt horrible! I got great deals and stocked up on lunch stuff and pet food but I don’t usually spend that much at the store! I would guess I average $50 a week for groceries. We have a nice stock pile so I manage to only buy things at rock bottom and live off the rest!
How many people are in your family? 2 adults and 3 BOYS!
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Cheese, produce and meat

  20. What state do you live in? Alabama

Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes – Publix and Kroger

What stores do you normally shop at? Publix, Aldi and occasionally Kroger and Costco

What is your average grocery savings? 40%-50% normally

If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? I try to keep it between $100-$125 a week.

How many people are in your family? We are a blended family with the two of us and 7 children total (5, 7. 10, 15, 17, 19, and 21 thought the 19 year old has an apartment of her own, the 21 year old eats only half her meals here, and the youngest 5 are gone every other weekend). We rarely ever eat out.

What is the biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Gluten-free specialty stuff like flour as well as meat. Thank goodness for Aldi’s sales on milk and produce. We can go through 4 gallons of milk in 2 days!

  24. What state do you live in? Alabama
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
What stores do you normally shop at? Publix
What is your average grocery savings? 35-55% Since I work full time, I usually only spend two hours (sometimes less) total per week prepping my coupons, viewing coupons match-ups on PPP and my shopping list.
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? $80-$110 but I don’t always shop every week, more like every 10 days or so. I always spend on the higher end if there are good stock-up sales going on that week.
How many people are in your family? 3 total, 2 adults and a 3 year old who’s skinny as a rail, but sometimes eats as much as I do! I really wish I had his energy!
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Produce and meat . I try to buy as much organic as possible, so it’s hard to get either of these at a great price.

  25. I live in northern NV.
In my area only Scolari’s doubles coupons, and only up to and including $1.
Smiths, Raleys, Scolaris, CVS, Walgreen’s and Rite-aid. (I never pay for make up for my teens as I shop the drug stores and match my coups to their clearanced (75%off) pricing!! whoot whoot!!
I save in the 60% to 75% range.
I have a 5’4″, fifth grader, who weighs 110 lbs. I never spend over $100, but I buy bulk sale items and my groceries for about that.
5 family members, 2 teen girls and one pre teen boy.
Meats and veggies. Instead of where’s the beef, we should be yelling where’s the veggie coupons?? lol

  26. What state do you live in?Tennessee
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
What stores do you normally shop at? Publix, CVS, Rite Aid, Wags
What is your average grocery savings? at least 50%
If you don’t mind sharing, what is your weekly grocery budget? $75.00
How many people are in your family? 4
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Planning the meals and sticking to it! Also our grocery tax is almost 10% here! Last but not least….Eating out! My husband is a pastor and we are so rushed on Sundays. A couple of times we ate out lunch and dinner…ouch! We quit that and I try to use Mrs. Potts! Love PPP!!!!

  27. Shannon Cape says

What state do you live in? Alabama
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
What stores do you normally shop at? Publix, sometimes Kroger
What is your average grocery savings? 65-75%
What is your weekly grocery budget? $50-$75 try to keep it close to $50
How many people are in your family? Five total – 4 boys and myself
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Meat, If we have a meal without meat with 2 teenage boys and my husband its like I took away their freedom! haha My youngest boy is only 16 months so he does not mind no meat. Fresh fruit and veggies are other areas I am finding it harder to keep under a reasonable amount.

  28. What state do you live in? Ohio
Do you shop at a store that doubles coupons? Yes
What stores do you normally shop at? Giant Eagle (for the really good sales since they’re the only store that doubles!), Marc’s and Aldi
What is your average grocery savings? 75-80%
What is your weekly grocery budget? Right around $50/week
How many people are in your family? 3; my husband and I and our 2 year old daughter.
What is your biggest area of weakness for your families grocery budget? Entertaining and community events, my husband has a huge family and we regularly get together for huge dinner parties. Everyone brings and dish or two. Also we’re very active in our place or worship, often volunteering and preparing a dish for as many as 150-200 people at a time. The ladies have formed groups of five and the groups rotate for special events with one member of each group assigned to one portion of the meal (veg, meat, dessert..etc). When we have a lot of “stuff” going on like this Sticking to that $50 a week does not happen! Luckily, I stock up on frequently used items during a good sale so it doesn’t always hit us as hard!
