These were strawberries that we saw in Grand Central Station for $6.99/lb. Seriously, who buys this stuff? (Crazy, especially when you can find $.99 strawberries in Chinatown!)
I'm such a nerd. (really.) Checking out produce prices (or prices on eggs, milk, etc.) is just something I love to do, so I made my family stop at an Aldi in Bennington Vermont while we were traveling this week. (Anyone ever heard of Bennington, Vermont? It's a cute but tiny little town so I was so impressed they even had an Aldi!)
Just for fun, here were a few of their produce prices. . .
Grapes $2.98/2 lb. (great price!)
Apples $2.99/3 lb. bag
Carrots $.79/bag
Bananas $.22/lb. (they had clearanced them to get rid of them all ~ do you know how badly it hurt not to pick some of those up to make some Banana Blueberry Bread?) 😉
Pineapple $1.29 (they're $.99 at our local store this week)
Corn $1.49/4 ears
Spices $.99 (if you need spices, Aldi is your place to stock up!)
And, just for fun I noticed this cute Fisher Price swing for just $14.99 ~ retails for $19.97 on Amazon
We picked up some grapes, bread and PB&J for more bargain meals along the road, but it was all I could do to pass some of those produce prices by. They also don't charge tax on groceries in Vermont (love that!)
Have you been surprised by grocery prices in other cities? I love shopping Publix & Kroger, but I don't think you can beat Aldi (or price matching Aldi at Walmart) for fantastic produce deals, and they're definitely worth looking for when you're on the road!

And I thought I was the only one who loved to scope out food prices of other regions! Guess that makes me a nerd too. Oh well, most of the “nerds” in my graduating class ended up being successful financially.:))
I’m right there with you Kim ~ glad I’m not the only one! And yes, nerds aren’t all bad…. 😉
