Over the years I have done SO MANY freezer cooking sessions. Honestly, it's not easy the first few times if you don't have a plan. Here's a few common questions I've been asked through the years. I hope they are helpful!
All of the Passionate Penny Pincher freezer meals have been tested by the pickiest of palates! Check out a good list of recipes to start with right here.
The best type of cooking for anyone who is busy! Seriously though, freezer meals are recipes that you can prep in advance with the sole purpose of placing into the freezer and reheating or cooking at a later time. Not all freezer recipes are created equal which is why having someone like me and my team test recipes for you helps you save even more time!
Here is a list of freezer cooking supplies we also refer to frequently.
The obvious ones are ziploc bags and disposable foil pans. Any reliable freezer-safe disposable bag brand will do. Also, depending on the freezer meal (like our zucchini lasagna recipe), the disposable aluminimum foil pans work great.
We love the freezer bag stands too and wouldn't do a freezer cooking day without them! You use these bag stands to hold the bag upright making it much easier to place ingredients into the bag as you go.
Generally no. You may cook different ingredients in a recipe before freezing entirely. However, many recipes we share just call for just dumping all of the ingredients in a freezer bag. This makes your freezer prep time much faster!
We suggest cooking your freezer meals within 3 months of your original prep date. We also double bag the freezer meals. Double bagging is where you are placing the (raw) ingredients into one freezer bag. Then that bag is placed into a clean empty bag.
As an added quick tip, we add printed cooking instructions into the clean bag. This is helpful so you know exactly how to cook that freezer meal without remembering where you got the recipe.
Yes, absolutely! Many of our recipes (which includes frozen meat) can be placed into a slow cooker to prepare for quick cooking. While you can thaw freezer crockpot meals before cooking, it's not necessary.
