Consider changing your passwords! Almost half a billion users had their personal information (including phone number!) leaked in this Facebook Data Breach.
Facebook Data Breach ~ YIKES!
If you're a Facebook user, it may be time to change your password! That's because the personal data of over 533 million Facebook users (possibly including full name, location, birthday, email addresses, phone number, and relationship status) may have been leaked on a low-level hacking forum.
In fact, the Passionate Penny Pincher Facebook page was duplicated a couple days ago and PPP Team Member Staci was affected by this as well. Here's what she had to say:
“Just yesterday my account was copied and sent all kinds of friend requests. My friend let me know it had been copied, as well as one of our sweet PPP customers. I'm still trying to get it all straightened out.”
Facebook believes the data in question was scraped from people’s Facebook profiles by malicious actors using their contact importer prior to September 2019. However, even though the exposed data is almost two years old, security experts say that it’s still extremely valuable to hackers. Scammers could still use the stolen information to impersonate people, commit fraud, or scam Facebook users . . . which makes me so sad! 🙁
Security tips? Here's what Facebook said on their blog –
“While we addressed the issue identified in 2019, it’s always good for everyone to make sure that their settings align with what they want to be sharing publicly. In this case, updating the “How People Find and Contact You” control could be helpful. We also recommend people do regular privacy checkups to make sure that their settings are in the right place, including who can see certain information on their profile and enabling two-factor authentication.”
While it may be a hassle, now would be a great time to update your passwords and security settings! (For more details on this data leak and security breach, check out this Business Insider article.)
