Beginning Couponing Part One: Coupon Myths & Determining A Budget (And What Coupon Questions Do You Have?)

WARNING:  This video is a little long! I'll work on shortening it next week 🙂

I get so many emails and comments about teaching a coupon class, so I decided to bring the class that my friend Shannon and I teach right to you!   This week we'll start by covering the importance of determining a grocery budget, shopping based on the sales ad, and discuss coupon myths.

(And yes, I'm mortified by the fact that Youtube chose a screen with my eyes closed as the main photo – arghhhhhh! But after hours of trying to figure out how to get the silly thing uploaded, I didn't have it in me to try again!  If you have any problems viewing it, go HERE.)  I fixed the photo . . . WOOHOO! 🙂

I'd love to hear what specific questions you have about couponing, and I'll try to cover your questions in upcoming videos.  And, if you have friends who are just starting and not sure where to begin, this is a great time for them to start following along!

  1. Thanks so much for this Laurie! I have a really hard time just making myself stick to my budget, so this was a much needed reminder to me. Thank you!

  2. Great info for beginners! Plus a much needed reminder to me to stay on budget!! 🙂

    • Thanks Angela! Sticking to a budget is hard some days even for me – it’s so easy to not worry to much over it and then watch my receipts get too high. Thanks for watching! 🙂

  3. love the stick to your budget advice. I also love my laser printer. i bought one refurbished through for $49 a couple of months ago. it has paid for itself by me not having to buy the color ink jet cartridges anymore.

also, i think your video’s still shot from youtube is the very last image of the video? have you tried clipping a second off of the end? it seemed to me that it was the same image, but i could be wrong.

i eagerly anticipate next week’s organization vid!!

    • That’s a great idea on how to get a printer Kari! I really do think the laser printer has saved so much money, so that’s a great way to get one at a discounted price.

I googled the silly picture thing, and it says you can choose a different one (Youtube picks 3 for you), but you have to wait for it to change over – I HATE THAT!!! Some people said they had to wait as long as a month for it to switch, so I’ll just feel like a goofball until then! 🙂

  4. Hi Laurie! Thank you so much for your useful video. I started couponing a month ago when my contract finished and the company i was working for didnt renew me. I think that it is a wonderful way of helping my husband. i started my stock pile and i think i’m doing good (sometimes save 25, sometimes 50 %)
    thanks for tha helpful information!!!!!

    • You’re already doing great Cecilia! I know that couponing will make this transition easier for you, and please feel free to let me know if you have any questions!

  5. I enjoyed your video. It was nice to actually see you in person (I guess that is video) after communicating with you on here. I just watched your binder video also. I somehow missed that one when you posted it. I recently changed over to a binder. That was my Mother’s Day gift. I very much dislike the baseball card inserts my family got me and ordered BCW brand paper currency pages online. They are awesome. I still use the baseball card inserts some, like for smaller coupons that I don’t have to fold or trim a ton to fit. Thank you for keeping up such a great site. I am about to start doing my grocery shopping in the Madison area instead of Decatur. Can you recommend the best Publix to shop at in Madison? I think the one on Hwy 20 would be closest, but the one on County Line may be about the same distance for me. Thanks.

    • Thanks Mary – I know I love watching blogger videos just to see who they are too! 🙂 But, not so sure I love doing them . . .

The 20 store is great for couponers, except that they’re not taking the Star Market coupons. County Line is taking the Star coupons, so if you’re planning to use those they may be your best bet! I’ve had more difficulty using coupons at the 72 store, but they’re the only one still taking Earth Fare – so they might be worth driving the extra few miles. . . and I’ve heard other people love that store (it’s been awhile since I’ve been there!) Also, I’ve heard the ones in Decatur might take Food World coupons? There are several of those in the Huntsville City book, so you may want to watch out for those. Hope that helps, and thanks so much for reading!

  6. Christy Rose says

Thank you so much for this! I am pretty new to couponing and I really appreciate your tips and look forward to more!

  7. Your accent is so adorable! Thanks for sharing!

    • How funny Randi! I don’t think I have much of an accent, but my friend Nancy told me that my living in the South these last few years definitely shows more in the videos (when I’m nervous!!!) 🙂

  8. Hi Laurie,

I first want to say “thank you” for taking some much of your time to share your knowledge of couponing with others. I have only been couponing for a few months now and loving it. However, I am having a bit of a time understanding the drug stores couponing with the extra bucks etc… I think it would make a great video 🙂 I Really Appreciate U!!

    • Great idea Sherina! I just added it to the list (we usually teach that at the very end of the classes, so it may be towards the end of the series but I promise to get to it!)

  9. Tammy Shelton says

Laurie, I finally had a chance to watch this. Thanks for posting the link. I have been couponing for a couple years, but more seriously I would say over the last year. I wanted to watch the video to see what the “professionals” would say if teaching a class and to see if what I am doing is “on target”. I don’t know a lot of people locally who are really into couponing, so it’s good to see/hear what others are doing.
BTW, you gave a GREAT TIP that I DIDN’T know. I didn’t know that Walgreen’s refills ink cartridges. WOW! What a HUGE savings that will be. Thank you.
Great video. You did very well! Thanks for the re-assurance. 😀

    • Tammy – I’m pretty far from a “professional” (my friend Shannon & I always laugh when 100 people show up in our classes – we’re just 2 moms who love to coupon!) But, I know I wondered where to start, so this seems to be what’s working for us.

Thanks for your encouragement, and if no one is teaching in your area it would be great for you to start teaching them! Good luck – and thanks for watching 🙂
