Target Dollar Spot: New Spring Finds!

The Target Dollar Spot is constantly changing up their offerings of fun goodies.  Find new seasonal decor, crafts & partyware pop up on a weekly basis!  Here are our current faves….

Target One Spot – New Finds!

I am loving all the cute Spring Time & Kid's Craft deals in the Target One Spot right now!  The Target One Spot is one of my favorite places to shop for seasonal decor, because I can snag a few fun trendy items for each season and not break the bank. Take a peek at what we found this week . . .

Spring Kitchen Towels – $3

Oh my word these are so stinkin' cute!

Garden Kneeling Pads – $3

Planters – $5

Easter Pencils – $1

Easter Bowls – $3

Chalkboard Bunny – $3

Boot Planter – $5

Target Dollar Spot Online Shopping

Wondering if you can shop Target Dollar Spot online?  Well the answer is Yes…  and No 🙂

Target has a very similar online shop called  Bullseye's Playground – where they have a TON of organizational stuff and cute goodies.

You won't usually find exactly the same treasures that you'll discover in the Target One Spot area in stores – BUT you'll find lots of seasonal decor, crafts and supplies that are extra inexpensive.

Target Bullseye Playground

Shopping the latest Bullseye Playground is pretty fun – there's always something new!    (Search by NEWEST to see the most recently added items first)

It's an EXCELLENT place to purchase items for home schooling and classroom supplies.  It's also a perfect place to shop for party favors and decor!

Keep in mind that with some items you have to buy them “in bulk” – like you may need to buy 3 Journals for $6 (rather than just 1 journal for $2).  That helps keep them offer low prices while still keeping the shipping free 🙂

Wait – there's FREE Shipping at Target?

Yep!  RedCard holders get FREE Shipping on most orders, but on lower priced items (where shipping can be cost prohibitive) they get free shipping over $25.   (Like Amazon Add-On Items)   NON-RedCard holders can still get free shipping on orders over $35 🙂

Get a Target RedCard Debit Card Here – it's NOT a credit card so you'll get free shipping and 10% OFF with none of the bad aspects of having another credit card!

Top 10 Grocery Budget Busters

top10budgetbusters

Feel like you're spending more at the grocery store than you want, but aren't sure where that extra moo-lah is going? Here are the top 10 Grocery Budget Busters that can quickly ruin your grocery budget.

1. Pre-cooked meat or chicken.

Folks, if you purchase items pre-packed you can spend a bundle without meaning to. For example, I love having grilled chicken handy for a quick salad or taco in a hurry. But paying for convenience can ruin your grocery budget.

Screen Shot 2016-01-11 at 12.00.37 PM

The container on the left in the picture above shows how much chicken is in a Tyson Grilled & Ready package (a little over 1 1/4 cups) which costs around $4. On the right is what I made myself for $4.09 after stocking up on chicken breast at Fresh Thyme while on sale ~ almost 5 cups of chicken!

Here's the math:

  • 1 1/4 cups Tyson = $4
  • 5 cups chicken that I grilled myself = $4.09
  • 1 1/4 cups Tyson ($4) X 4 to get 5 cups = $20

To get the same amount of Tyson I would spend over $20. Craziness.

(UPDATE: if you absolutely love having chicken pre-cooked for you, you'll love what I found out at Costco last week.) 🙂

2. Uncrustables.

You are paying a bundle for convenience here. It really doesn't take all that much time to make a pb&j, so take a few minutes to do it yourself!

uncrustables

Here's the math:

3. Certain cleaning supplies.

If you have dish soap, lemon juice, baking soda, peroxide and vinegar in your home most of your cleaning can be taken care of. Here are a few homemade cleaners to try:

Soap Scum Remover - PINTEREST

4. Fabric softener.

Don't want to pay a high price for fabric softener? Try vinegar instead. Add 1/2 cup to your load before washing.

5. Refrigerated & frozen convenience foods, as well as pre-cut fruit or veggies.

Walk down the refrigerated & frozen aisle at your grocery store and you'll see a ton of processed foods ~ everything from mashed potatoes to macaroni and cheese to frozen pizzas.

You can make just about everything from scratch yourself in these aisles, and you'll save a bundle! And, cut your fruit and vegetables yourself. You'll pay a pretty penny to have someone else do the cutting up for you.

6. Food you won't really eat.

Ever think – Oh!  This would be something good to buy – I should try it! (Me too!) Every time I walk past the fresh fish counter at the store, I am so tempted to purchase some because I know it's good for me. And, a few times I've actually gone and ahead and bought it.

However, our family just isn't doesn't eat much fresh fish (my husband and I do like salmon), so to spend money on food that won't really get eaten isn't worth it. If you know you're not realistically going to use it up or cook it for dinner, skip those foods.

7. Name brand stuff.

So often folks feel like they need a certain brand to get a good product, but nowadays store brands are fantastic. They've come a long way from the Malt O Meal cereals I remember as a kid (Malt O Meals are even pretty good these days!), and many stores carry store brand foods that are manufacturered in the same facility as their brand name competitor.

There are times when it's actually cheaper to buy a name brand when it's on sale (especially with a coupon), so watch for those deals when they pop up. But, be open to trying the name brand because you really can save!

8. Expensive toiletries.

High end toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, razors, soaps, etc.) can quickly bust your budget. If you have extra wiggle room in your budget each week that's fine, but if you're really trying to save, shop the generic brands at your grocery store and watch for coupons to get the best prices.

9. Certain organic foods.

Organic foods cost a bundle, and can quickly bust your grocery budget if things are tight in your home.

11 Easy Ways to Save on Organic Food

Some fruits and vegetables have “thicker skin”, so you may opt to purchase the non-organic version of those foods. See more on the Dirty Dozen HERE to know what's really worth paying more for, and find tips on how to save on organic food over HERE.

10. Deals that are “too good” to pass up.

Sometimes I come across a deal (or two, or three?) that I think is just “too good” to pass up. And when there's lots of room in my budget that's fine, but usually (because we like a tiny grocery budget at our house) that can end up ruining my budget plan for the week.

If you see a deal that you just can't miss, buy enough of it to last your family the next 6 weeks, because in that amount of time it will almost always go on sale again (promise.) Don't spend too much of your grocery budget on things you don't need right now, because those deals really do come around again!

Resurrection Rolls Easter Recipe

We've been making Resurrection rolls for as long as I can remember – they're a sweet part of our Easter morning breakfast tradition and I think you'll love them too!

Resurrection Rolls Recipe

If you're looking for something special to make on Easter morning that also has a little object lesson for your family, these Resurrection Rolls might be just the thing to try out.

Back when my husband and I were first married, I made these rolls and we absolutely loved them.  Somewhere along the way though, I completely forgot about them until a PPP reader reminded me about them, so we of course had to try them out again.

Resurrection Rolls are one of those great recipes that use up a few Pillsbury Crescent Rolls  (is it possible to mess up a Pillsbury Crescent Roll?  we did of course use the reduced fat variety . . .), but are also just a fun treat to make each Easter.

My kids help me make them, and promptly devour a few minutes after they pop out of the oven.

So why are they called Resurrection Rolls?

Well, you use a marshmallow for the recipe, but when the sweet rolls bake up, the marshmallow disappears, so the “tomb” is found empty.  We had an interesting discussion when my youngest was little and asked  ~ “Momma, Why did Jesus have to die on that cross?”

Well, I love that these rolls offer a little object lesson on Easter (as well as make an amazing treat.) The crescent rolls represent the cloth that Jesus was wrapped in, the white marshmallow represents Christ because of His purity, the butter represents the embalming oils and the cinnamon sugar are examples of the spices used to prepare Christ's body for burial.

After the Resurrection Rolls bake, the marshmallows “disappear” and the rolls represent the empty tomb.

These are a great treat any time of year, and we usually make a double batch because we love them just so much. If you're looking for a unique way to share the Easter story with your kids, these Resurrection Rolls might be just the treat in your home too.

Resurrection Rolls (we doubled the recipe)

Ingredients

  1. 1 package Crescent Rolls
  2. 8 marshmallows  or Peeps 🙂
  3. 1/4 cup melted butter or margarine
  4. 2 tbsp. cinnamon
  5. 2 tbsp. sugar

Directions

  1. Mix together cinnamon and sugar in small bowl.  In another bowl melt margarine.
  2. Dip marshmallow into butter, then into cinnamon sugar.
  3. Roll marshmallow in crescent roll, pinching together at the seams.
  4. Roll crescent roll in butter, then cinnamon sugar again.
  5. Spray muffin cup liners with cooking spray, then place each crescent roll in muffin tin.
  6. Bake in 400 degree oven for 12-14 minutes.
  7. Enjoy! Makes 8 rolls.
*Note – you may want to put some aluminum foil underneath these while they're baking as the marshmallow goo tends to leak a bit.

Do you have any special treats that you plan to make this Easter?  I'd love to hear what they are in the comments section . . . I'm always looking for new ideas!

HelloFresh | Try It For As Low As $3.66 per Meal!

Have you heard of HelloFresh? It's a meal-kit delivery service (similar to Marley Spoon!), that delivers all the fresh ingredients needed to make each meal right to your doorstep (which saves you from having to meal plan and grocery shop!).

Well, right now, you can get a 6 Meal Box for 2 People (3 Recipes) for only $22!  (That breaks down to just $3.66 per meal!)

They come packaged exactly as you'd expect – insulated to stay cold –  and include all the ingredients you'll need to cook and finish the meal (beyond some basic pantry staples).

Here are a few examples of meal options:

  • Chicken Over Tabbouleh
  • Adobo Loco Steak
  • Chicken Cheddar Fajitas
  • Beef Chiles Rellenos
  • Gouda Pork Burgers
  • Mediterranean Baked Veggies

The instructions should be easy, and I love that everything is delivered and you don't have to do anything beyond cook the meal. Plus, you get to try new things!

The price is less than going out to eat (and such a treat for dining IN) and with your first box for only $22, it really might be worth trying. I think it would be PERFECT for a “date” night with your love!  (I mean we have to eat, why not cook together and make a night of it?)

Stitch Fix Review (and My 5 Stitch Fix Tips!)

Stitch Fix Reviews and 5 Secret Stitch Fix Tips: try out Stitch Fix for yourself right over HERE!

April 2019 Stitch Fix Review

Here's what was in my Stitch Fix Review Box this month!

Tinsel pink and blue flannel top $38 or $28.50 if I keep the whole box

Bay to Baubles Silver Earrings – $22 or $16.75 if I keep the whole box

Market & Spruce Jacket $88 or $66 if I kept the whole box

Democracy Jeans $68 or $51 if I keep the whole box

Striped Arnold Raglan Top $38 or $28.50 if I keep the whole box

Stitch Fix Outfits Decision Time….

So if I keep everything from Stitch Fix this month, I'll pay $199.50, and I'm lucky enough to have enough Stitch Fix credit to cover the entire box.

Not gonna lie, I'm keeping it all.

That makes each item $40 per piece, and while I wouldn't spend that on the earrings or probably tops for sure, I totally would on the jeans and jacket, and the fact that they sized me right up and delivered exactly a few pieces I can use that fit perfectly without me every stepping into a dressing room is pretty fantastic to me.

As I shared in the video, I would never ever never have done tried out Stitch Fix in our early penny pinching days.

At that point I shopped Walmart and Goodwill, wore hand-me-downs and didn't splurge on clothes all that often.

But as a busy working mom having someone shop for me (and style me!) is an incredible gift, and for this season it's totally worth it to me.

So, there you have it ~ I'm keeping it all this month and am wearing these cozy jeans and flannel even as I type from this side of the screen. 🙂

  • If you keep your entire box you’ll save 25% off the entire purchase
  • Invite friends on Facebook or via email (or even text messages) to sign up through you and you’ll get $25 in free referral credit ~ love that!

If you'd like to try out Stitch Fix too, head on over HERE. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Stitch Fix too!

February 2019 Stitch Fix Review

Here's what I got in my Stitch Fix Box this month!

Classic Alargata Toms Shearling Lined Suede Flats $70 – $52.50 if I keep the whole box

Micki Stretch Fleece Graphic Top $58 – $43.50 if I keep the whole box

Corinna Brushed Dolman Knit Top $38 – $28.50 if I keep the whole box

Gabrielle Pre Layered Necklace $28 – $21.00 if I keep the whole box

Kallon 1 Pocket Hooded Knit Top $38 – $28.50 if I keep the whole box

I honestly haven't quite decided what to do as far as keeping these. Ugh!

Update: I ended up keeping the Toms and the black sweatshirt. I love them both!

If I keep the whole box my cost would be $174 – AND to make life a wee bit sweeter, I have $250 in Stitch Fix credit (they sent it to me as a gift ~ I was so thankful!)

$174 split five ways is $34.80 per item and really not all that awful to have someone shop for me. I normally wouldn't consider it but I hardly have any more casual (trendy!) things and we're coming up on soccer and track season for my girls here in Ohio. It would be so nice to have a few things that felt cozy but still cute . . . so I'm considering keeping the box (and would love to hear your thoughts!)

And while I would never normally pay that much for those Toms, a sweet girl that I used to have in my youth group messaged me on Instagram after seeing mine and said they were her favorite pair of shoes of all time ~ until they got stained (they're suede and need to be sprayed if I'm going to keep them.) That alone was pretty convincing, so I'm leaning towards keeping the box.

Um, what would you do?  Please leave a comment to let me know (and realize I totally get that I'm paying for convenience – but I have no time to shop and do like feeling a little pulled together when heading out the door!)

January 2019 Stitch Fix Review

Here's what I got in my Stitch Fix Box this month!

Sabrina Scarf $38 (if I keep everything in the box, $28.50)

Daniela Distressed Boyfriend Jeans $58 (if I keep everything in the box, $43.50)

Hayley Button Down Top $68 (if I keep everything in the box, $51) ~ honestly, I LOVE this one because it feels amazing ~ it's super light weight and just lays well but $51 is a LOT OF MOOLAH for a top for me even after the 25% off. Ugh!

Josslyn Cotton Blend V Neck Pull Over $68  (if I keep everything in the box, $51)

Nouri Textured Cardigan $48  (if I keep everything in the box, $36)

The two things I LOVE from the box are the jeans and the flannel. The rest of it I can take or leave, but since you save 25% on everything if you keep the entire box, I'm tempted to consider it!

So my plan is to let my girls look it over tonight when they get home (they'd look great in the sweaters I think!) and if they love them I might keep the entire box. If not…. I might send it all back (to pay $126 for just the top and jeans feels way too high to me, and if I'm going to have to go shop anyways I think I might be able to find those for less!)

BUT, I really do feel pretty cute in the whole box ~ I'm just not sure if I need any of it. Honestly, if I didn't do Facebook Live every day (I'm always struggling with what to wear!) and have a few conferences coming up I wouldn't consider Stitch Fix at all, but for busy working women who have no time to shop Stitch Fix is an incredible gift because not only do they send you clothes, they shop for you and style you.

So hmph. We'll see ~ I'll let you know what the verdict is after my girls check them out tonight (I'd love to hear your thoughts too ~ leave a comment to share!) 🙂

December 2018 Stitch Fix Review

Soooo… this month my Stitch Fix Review Box was a wee bit different.

My husband's Christmas office party is next week, and while I have plenty of clothes in my closet right now I need a new dress to wear to the party.

So I let my Stitch Fix stylist know that's what I needed, and they sent me a few dresses to try as well as a coat to wear to the party too.

Take a peek . . .

I'm trying to decide between these two (the length on the one on the left is just a little short for me, and I'm not so sure how I feel about sleeveless dresses in the winter?) but both are great options I think (I'm planning to show them to my hubby and girls tonight to see what they think too.)

As far as pricing goes ~ I think for four dressy dresses and a coat the totals weren't too bad. The cost would have been $284.50 for me to keep everything (but I really only need one dress ~ I bought a very similar coat at Old Navy years ago for $2 on clearance, so one dress is all I'll be keeping!)

So Is Stitch Fix Worth It?  (3 Reasons it may be…)

As I’ve shared before, there are 3 types of folks that I feel like need to consider a trying a Stitch Fix Box:

  1. those who have $20 to try it out as a gamble (the $20 will go towards any item you keep) and have enough self control to say NO to things that aren’t really awesome in their box (right now they’re offering a free styling fee, so you just need enough self control to send it back if it’s not in your budget and you don’t love what you get!)
  2. moms who work outside of the home and need to feel pull together enough for work
  3. anyone who needs a decent pair of pants or jeans that fit perfectly (they have the best jeans EVER, if you struggle with finding pants Stitch Fix is worth a shot at least one time!)

October 2019 Stitch Fix Review

Not gonna lie . . . today was not my favorite Stitch Fix Box.

I only kept one thing.

(That cute sweater above because I used my $20 styling credit towards that!)

The whole box would have cost me $136 . . .

but it just wasn't all that great. 🙁

So, before I even had a chance to consider things that I really wasn't in love with, I sent the things I wasn't so sure on back.

In the last year since getting Stitch Fix, this was probably my least favorite box, but I love that they make it so simple for me to try on a few new things and see how they work.

While Stitch Fix isn't for everyone (for sure!) for me it (normally?) is an amazing way to feel pulled together, knowing I'm paying not only for the clothing but to have someone who knows what they're doing style me too.

Stitch Fix Review and 5 Secret Stitch Fix Tips

Last month I LOVED Stitch Fix though…

September 2018 Stitch Fix Review

lovvvvvved my Stitch Fix Box this month!

Like, loved it. 🙂

Each month I do a live Stitch Fix Review and unboxing to show you what kinds of outfits they're putting together for me - here's what I thought this month!

Stitch Fix Pricing + What I Kept

Because I'm racing against time tonight (wayyyy too much to do and never enough hours!) I'll be fast and furious about why I'm keeping allll the Stitch Fix Stuff + pricing details.

  • All five items were $167.24 after my 25% savings since I kept all 5 items.
  • That included two sweaters, a cardigan, the navy sleeveless knit top and cargo pants
  • loved those cargo pants with the denim jacket and tee shirt (I love that tee and haven't figured yet what to wear it with!)
  • love that now I have some perfect outfits for fall, and for $33 per piece I'm feeling pretty good about this one!

5 Secret Stitch Fix Tips

I also got this Stitch Fix question from a reader today, and goodness, I've heard it from quite a few folks so thought I'd answer it once and for all for everyone!
Here's what PPP reader Carolyn asked:
Hi Laurie! I have been following Passionate Penny Pincher now for about two months and I am loving it! As a busy mom of three and working part time I really enjoy all the tips, tricks, and encouragement, so thank you for that! I have a random question for you.. I have received two boxes from Stitch Fix and have not liked either of them! I was so excited to to get them because I also have no style and trying to shop with my three little blessings is well just kinda impossible.
So I wanted to ask you if you could share with me what style you actually chose and maybe price range because I have loved everything you have gotten! Our styles seem similar I am a plan down to earth busy mama who is ready to try to look put together after a rough year last year (went through a bilateral mastectomy and hysterectomy at the age of 35). Thank your for your smiles and encouragement! Have a blessed day!
So first, goodness Carolyn, I'm sooooo thankful for you and feel so thankful that you take time to keep up with PPP!

Here are my 5 Stitch Fix Tips to get the BEST experience:

  1. Pin everything you love to a Pinterest board (you can follow mine here and see ideas!)
  2. Send a message to your Stitch Fix stylist and tell them to look at your Pinterest board  (you can even send them mine – ha!) 🙂
  3. Try things different ways. IT TOTALLY MAKES A DIFFERENCE that I try things on in front  of a few hundred folks on Facebook Live. 🙂 For example today, someone mentioned a way to wear the navy top a way that I would NEVER have kept (I wouldn't have kept the navy top because I didn't know to tuck it in and belt it, but it looks so stinkin' cute done the right way!) Definitely watch those Pinterest boards too for style because that helps a ton!
  4. Ask for the cheapest boxes in the settings – I definitely do that!
  5. Remember it takes a little while. My boxes get better ALL the time, and I know it's because they're till figuring me out! I always give as much feedback as I can, which definitely helps!

Lots of my stitch fix outfits that I've loved

Free Fishing License Days 2019

Until my son decided he wanted to take up fishing several years ago, I had no idea you had to purchase a fishing license to fish in your state. However, it looks like several states are offering “Take Me Fishing” dates with fishing license free days where you can enjoy fishing for a day without a fishing license!

While fishing licenses are pretty reasonable ($5-$20 depending on where you live), this is a great way to try it out for free before purchasing a license. Head on over HERE to find which dates are offered for free in your state!

I hope you've loved More Money March as much as I haveI'll be honest, March was a roller coaster for our family with traveling (next time I can't work on my budget during Spring Break ~ yikes!), but overall I feel like this was just the kick in the booty that I needed to get back on track.

What was even more exciting for me though was to see your success. Here are just a few of the (real!) successes I've heard from folks who joined the challenge in March . . .

“I paid off 2 of my credit cards!!! Woohoo!!!!!”

“Thank you PPP, MMC was eye-opening for me personally. I was able to make over 20 meals out of my freezer and pantry. I was able to pay off 2 credit cards , the snowball and simply making a phone call to lower household bills works!! I am still learning how to make the most out of couponing 🙂 but the meal planning and freezer meals are such a good start. Lastly I am so thankful to have learned and shared with a wonderful MMC group of ladies. I feel truly blessed and appreciative that we are on this journey to be debt free together. Thank you.” ~ Lisa

“Someone pinch me, please! I think I must be dreaming! So, I have a teen-aged daughter who takes daily meds for a health condition and uses a prescription facial cleanser. I transfered her 3 prescriptions to a different pharmacy and saved myself $280 per month….that's $3,360.00 PER YEAR!! That's HUGE!! Thank you, Laurie & Shannon, for getting me thinking about where our money goes and how to trim where we can!!! Those crazy financial goals are becoming a reality!!” ~ Kathy

“I’ve loved this challenge this month, it helped me pay off 2 debts and saving money to pay the next one off by the end of next month! The biggest change we’ve made this month was not eating out as much and sticking to the budget although at times it was hard! I can’t wait to see what’s in store next month ( if there is anything)…Thank you Laurie & the More Money Challenge!” ~ Kasey

“I loved this challenge!! I didn’t have debt, but For the first time in forever, I actually stuck to the budget I made; paid cash for everything; exceeded my savings goals (by $1800!!🎉); saved money from other budget categories to pay cash for my dog’s $350 emergency and learned how to coupon effectively so I can control my out of control summer grocery spending when my college boy is home!! Loved the accountability and the supportive group! Can’t wait to practice again next month! Thank you PPP” ~ Terri

“I love that I finally understand how a budget works, that my eyes were opened to how much money I was throwing away and how I now see it as a challenge to spend as little as possible. I may not do all the couponing yet but I have made huge mental changes. Thank you!!” ~Kayla

“Love it. Been doing these things for a long time. Now my hubby can have a understanding of how I do this. He has been impressed with our success.” ~ Donna
