$379 Ikea Bedroom Makeover

Remember my recent trip to Ikea with my fun 11-year-old?

(If you're debating a trip to Ikea, you should definitely read this post for a peek at what you'll find.)

Well, we finally finished getting her bedroom put together, and wanted to show a few pictures. (I'm so pleased with how everything turned out!)

Now, I'm normally not an Ikea-furniture-kind-of-girl. I love beautiful (heavy, hardwood ~ traditional) furniture, but Caroline really wanted a loft bed. She had a pretty white Ethan Allen bed that we'd gotten from my sister-in-law a few years ago, but since Reagan finally left her tiny room for a real room in our new house, she managed to snag the bed. (Caroline was thrilled – she'd been hoping for a new “fancy” bed!)

After looking around online and at a few local stores I didn't see what we were looking for, so when she fell in love with this set (and I fell in love with the price), I knew it was meant to be. Here's the cost breakdown:

  • Loft Bed $129
  • Metal Desk Top $99
  • Junior Chair $34
  • Blue Night Stand $49.99 (my favorite)
  • Magnets for Metal Boards $5.98
  • White Lantern Lights (we have to work on these still) $7.99
  • Artificial Plants $3.99
  • Bedding from Kohl's $50
  • TOTAL = $379.95
We're going to still use the dresser she had for now – it was one that I had growing up that's been re-painted in white with silver drawer pulls (I can't believe I didn't take a picture while I was in there!) Here's a peek of how her room looks now . . .

(The cords on those little lantern lights are about to drive me crazy ~ we've got to get them hung up somehow!)

I love (love, love, love!) this night stand – it's got a whole in the back for an outlet so she can charge her Kindle at night, and it's just so cute!

Have you gotten any fun furniture recently at Ikea, or come up with other great ways to save? Bedroom furniture can get expensive, so I'd love to hear your tips.

I'd love for you to join me over on Pinterest (I love that place!)  If you have a blog and have done a little fluffing in your home, I’d love to see it, so leave your link in the comments section. Also, if there’s a craft you’ve seen on a website that you’re hoping to make, feel free to share that link as well (I’m always looking for new ideas!)

Lol. I thought the same thing about the cords, then read your comment. Cords showing drive me crazy too!

  2. What a great job! It’s adorable 🙂

I am also not a big fan of “modern” style furniture, but I do love Ikea! My home has a country cottage look, and I was able to find several pieces at Ikea that coordinated…the side tables in my living room and our queen bed frame have a cottage feel and didn’t cost very much. We also have some inexpensive lamps from Ikea that I love! They have some great accessories and kitchen items that are really cute.

I saw this somewhere about dangling cords—use either an empty toilet paper or paper towel roll to thread them through. You can 'loop' them through multiple times (you know what I mean?-in, out, back in, out, etc….) to keep up the slack. I hope this makes sense….

Please let us know if you figure out any “easy” way to deal with making and especially changing the bedding on that bed. My son (now 12) received a very similar loft bed last year and it is nearly impossible for me (5’1″) to change his sheets. He pretty much doesn’t bother to make the bed at all! Having a bed against a wall makes changing sheets hard enough, but then to have it lofted off the ground makes it REALLY hard (at least for me). Would love any ideas of how to make it easier!

    • I already noticed that’s a pain Jennifer! I made it the other day myself, and the easiest way was to actually get up in the bed, pull everything kind of to the top (overtop of me) and then slide out 🙂

That being said, with some effort my daughter was able to do it again the next day, but I can’t imagine there’s an easy way! If I come up with it I’ll let you know 🙂

  5. I love it! Do you have the name of the wall color in the room? I’m currently searching for that perfect paint color. 🙂

  6. I thought I recognized you from HGC! My little girl goes there too and is on the Mighty Mites team there. I know everyone was sad see y’all go and hope you find a new place as wonderful. I adore your blog and check in often. Blessings in your new home and city.

I use 3m sticky hooks mounted under my desk top and ran the cords through them. Can't see them at all!

  8. Thanks for the tip Stephanie – that's a great idea!

  9. Great tips – I'm definitely going to try and do something but that's a great idea!

  10. We love the new bedroom Caroline! Miss you bunches! Kayle

  11. Love

  12. Were you able to use a regular mattress on this Ikea bed? Very cute!

  13. I adore that nightstand! I scoured IKEA and was unable to find it. Do you happen to know what it is called?
