Vinegar Saves The Day

pppvinegarsavestheday

My friend Staci is always coming up with clever cleaning tips, and I love this easy way she got rid of hard water stains around her sink!

All she did was soak a paper towel in vinegar . . .

pppvinegarsavestheday2

Then let it sit for a few hours.

pppvinegarsavestheday3

The gunk wiped right off!

Love love love this tip ~ I had no idea that would work and it looks fantastic, thanks so much for sharing Staci!

Looking for another smart idea? Head on over HERE to see how Staci spring cleaned her beds too. Love this!

Five Minute Challenge: Clean The Top Of Your Fridge

Over the summer I got lazy (really lazy!) with our five minute challenges, but I decided it was time to start them up again! While I won’t post them every day, I will try to post a quick to-do item at least a few times a week, which hopefully will help us tackle a few of those household chores that often are forgotten about.  Here’s today’s challenge:

Hop off the computer for five minutes, set a timer for five minutes, and thoroughly clean the top of your refrigerator. If you have a minute or two leftover, wipe down as many shelves in the fridge as you can get to!

If you’re hoping to get a little more organized this summer, here’s a great resource!  Motivated Moms offers a printable daily chore checklist that I’ve used and love, offering great reminders and a daily checklist of to-do items for a busy mom.  (Anyone else need a reminder to clip their kiddo’s fingernails?)  I’ve used both the paper checklist and the app, and when I used the printable checklist I just kept it on the fridge and checked it off throughout the day as the tasks were completed. My home always feels so much more peaceful when I keep up with it!

Five Minute Challenge: Tidy Your Fridge

I spent about five, ten, twenty minutes today doing a (quick?) cleanout of my fridge, and goodness gracious it’s so much better! For whatever reason that job is always at the very bottom of my to-do list, but whenever I take just a few minutes to work on it my whole house feels so much better.

I actually took before pictures but somehow they managed to get lost. 😉 (Really, I did take them, but I think my iPhone knew they were so ridiculous that I had absolutely no business posting them.) And yes, we still have an entire box of Hershey Bars from our vacation a few weeks ago ~ I’m just hoping they’ll go away without me eating them!

Five Minute Challenge (Okay, Not Really Five Minutes But I Promise You’ll Thank Me . . . )

Have you washed your car lately? If not, it’s time! This morning I hauled my kids to the car wash, and oh my goodness my car feels so much better now.

20130619-144023.jpg

I tried out the new Car Wash Express 3 in front of Walmart on Hwy 72 (for you Madison, Alabama folks), and it was the best $6 I’ve spent in quite awhile. It was the nicest drive-thru car wash I’ve gone to, and they were giving away free air fresheners, plus they shampooed my car mats in their fancy car-mat-washer! (I think you usually pay a few dollars for this, but I’ll definitely be trying it again ~ surely they’ve got a more professional name for it?)

Do you have a nagging tiny chore at home that will take just a few minutes to complete? Today’s your day to DO. IT.  Take a few minutes and get it over with. I promise it feels so good when you’re done (whew!)

Five Minute Challenge: What Can You Do In Five Minutes?

I’ve spent the last few days feeling completely overwhelmed by my home. love being a stay-at-home (*slightly working*) mom to my kids.  But in the summertime, when all the kids stuff and clutter quickly piles up, I start to go a little nuts.

So today I spent a solid hour doing some quick cleaning of our most used spaces. And, it got me thinking that there are several of them easy enough to tackle in five minutes or less if the cleaning in your home is a bit daunting also.

Here are a few ideas of what you can accomplish in just five minutes:

  1. Clean the top of the refrigerator.
  2. Wipe down the microwave.
  3. Vacuum out the couch (you might even find some money while you’re there!)
  4. Dust the dining room or kitchen table chairs and chair legs.
  5. Clean the top of the entertainment center.
  6. Do a quick sweep of the kitchen floor.
  7. Really (really!) scrub the kitchen sink.
  8. Wipe down the kitchen countertops.
  9. Clean a toilet. (Bleck!) While you’re at it, clean the bathroom sink off too.
  10. Wipe down all the door facings in your kitchen, family room and dining area.

What do you need to get done today? Take a few minutes and tackle at least one or two areas that are making you crazy ~ I promise it feels so good when you’re done (whew!)

Five Minute Challenge: Clean the Screens

Do you have five minutes? (You know you do!) Stand up, walk away from the computer (I know it hurts!) grab a bottle of inexpensive window cleaner, and clean every screen in your home.

Wipe down those computers, laptops, televisions, iPhones, iPads, Androids and whatever else you own with a screen that needs a good cleaning.  When  you’re all done, come on back and check out the deals . . . I promise they’ll be right here waiting for you!

Doesn’t that just feel good? (I did mine too, so I know it’s worth it.) 🙂

5 Minute Challenge: What Do You Need To Put Away?

Do you have a nagging tiny chore at home that will take just a few minutes to complete? Today’s your day to DO. IT.

After walking by my kids Easter baskets for a sold two weeks (seriously, it’s May . . . remember Easter this year was in March?) I finally had had enough. (I know, you’re so impressed, right?) Since apparently they won’t magically hop to the right place (and since I’m clearly the only person in my family with eyes), I finally did it.

Up in the attic.

Done.

(I was seriously tempted to just take a picture of the tidy floor after moving them out of the picture and not really put them away. Hence the picture of my attic . . . proof I completely the task.) 😉

Five Minute Challenge: The Laundry Is Done (Catch Up On Yours Too!)

How are you doing tackling this week’s laundry? After ironing, folding socks, and at least four-hundred-and-seventy-eight loads of laundry this week, my laundry is caught. up.

Um, but my son will be home from basketball practice soon and I’m pretty sure it’ll all begin again . . . ugh.

Right this second though, I’m way ahead of the game, and it feels so good! If you’ve got some laundry that could use some attention right now, go ahead and get to work. Set your time for five or ten minutes, turn some good music on, and see just how much you can get done . . . I know you can do it!

When you finish leave a comment on this or any of this week’s five minute challenge posts, and you’ll be entered to win a $10 Amazon Gift Card. (I’ll pick one lucky winner each Friday night.)  So, hurry and get to work for just five minutes, then come back here and let me know how it went!

Five Minute Challenge: More. Laundry.

How are you doing tackling this week’s laundry? From what I read in the comments on Day 1 and 2 of this week’s Laundry Challenge, you all are way more caught up on laundry than I am, so I’m more than a little motivated to get my act together. 😉

Just in case you’re a little behind on your laundry like me though, here’s today’s challenge:

Set the timer for just five minutes, and hunt down every stitch of dirty clothes in your home. . . then head to the laundry room. (Make sure to have your kids help too!) Then get those clothes sorted and add a new load to your washer if you need to. And of course, fold any clothes that have been fluffed in the dryer one too many times in hopes that somehow they’ll fold themselves!

Five Minute Challenge: The Socks.

Anyone else need to work on a little laundry this week with me? After ironing yesterday, tonight I (ahem) my sweet twelve year old is tackling the socks, and my husband is even folding laundry while I catch up on a few deals. Here’s how those socks looked when I dropped them off with the boys . . .

Five Minute Challenge: Tame The Laundry Monster

Congratulations to summergr…..24@yahoo.com for winning last week’s $10 gift card! Thanks to everyone who left a comment to enter.

Guess what we’re going to accomplish this week fellow penny pinchers? We are going to fiercely attack the laundry monster in our home. . . who’s with me???

My goal is that by Friday, every stitch of laundry in our homes (yours and mine both. . . ) will be washed, folded, ironed, and put away. (We can do this, right?) To get started, last night I spent about forty minutes attacking my ironing, and it felt so good when I walked by the laundry room this morning. Here’s the before and after pics (so exciting, right?)

All done . . . woohoo!

I was thrilled to find a few tops of my own that I’d completely forgotten about, as well as dresses for my daughter that were completely hidden in that mess.  If you’re like me and the laundry in your home could use some tlc this week, let’s work together and see what we can get done.  I’m betting that if you just take five minutes to get started, you’ll be motivated to finish out the work all week long!

Five Minute Challenge: One Area That’s Overwhelming You

Do you have one area in your home that just makes your stomach a wee bit queasy? 😉  (I wish I only had one!)  Today, hop away from that computer and spend just five minutes tackling it . . . and then see if you’re not motivated to keep right on going!

I tackled the play room today at our house (I usually just try not to go in there . . . ) and am amazed at how much more I accomplished than I expected in right around fifteen minutes.  I promise it’ll feel so good to have a little part of your mess tidied up a bit!

I’d love to hear which area you choose in your home . . . Ready, set, goooooo!

Five Minute Challenge: The Kids Bedroom

Did you work on your five minute (ahem . . .forty five minute . . . ) challenge yesterday? Well besides cleaning out the clothes yesterday, I also tidied up my daughter’s (disastrous-and-very-tiny) room, and it’s amazing what a few minutes spent picking up can do. Here are the before and after pics.

Seriously, why do I share this stuff?

 Before

After

Because her room is so small, it’s an absolute mess when her bed doesn’t get made (she’s learning how to make that bed, but at five she still hasn’t perfected it!)   There was definitely some other work to finish up there as well, but keeping those beds made is such an improvement.

Your turn now! Take five (or fifteen, or even forty five) minutes and tidy up a room in your home that’s gotten out of hand. It will feel so much better when you’re done, and if you’re like me, you might just be able to find your kids clothes int he morning!

Don’t forget that when you comment on any of this week’s five minute challenge posts, you’ll be entered to win a $10 Amazon Gift Card. (I’ll pick one lucky winner each Friday night.)  So, hurry and get to work for just five minutes, then come back here and let me know how it went!

Five Minute Challenge: The Kids Clothes Take Over

Because my poor kids drawers are a disaster thanks to the crazy is-it-spring-or-is-it-winter weather we have right now in Alabama, I decided to forego the laundry room clean out and spend this week cleaning out a few drawers.

I just couldn’t take it any longer. (Eek!)

I spent a bit longer than five minute (ummmm . . . maybe 45 minutes instead?) but hopefully this will encourage you also to take a few minutes this week and tackle that oh-so-overwhelming job in your home. Here’s how it looked when I started (after dumping out the top two drawers.)

UGH!!! But I turned on my free Dave Ramsey App, grabbed a Diet Coke, and set to work. After just forty minutes, things were looking so much better . . .

And here’s what will be heading off to donate, consign, or to the trash can. (If you consign clothes, I highly recommend going ahead and putting them on hangers at the end of each season – it makes them so much more manageable to just tag them when the next sale comes up!)

Your turn now! Do you have a few drawers or closets in your home that could use some serious attention? Head on over and get to work . . . and let me know how it goes. Take even just five minutes and see what you can accomplish, and I’d love to hear how many bags you can fill up!

Throw away any crusty crumblies, send any socks (SOCKS???) to the washing machine, and get rid of anything you don’t need. Five Minute Challenge: The Shower Doors

Here’s your five minute challenge for the day . . . you can do this! This morning I spent five (ummmm. . . maybe ten?) minutes working on the ewwww-so-gross-gunk-I-don’t-know-where-it-comes-from on my shower doors, and while it was absolutely so disgusting, it felt so good to have it all cleaned up when I finished!  Wanna join me? 😉

Hop up away from the computer, set the timer for just five minutes, and attack a set of shower doors in your home. Clean away any grime, and if you have a shower curtain instead of door,  check out these directions on how to clean your shower curtain in the washing machine.  If you have a little soap scum that needs to be dissolved, try out my favorite recipe for Homemade Soap Scum Remover!

Go ahead, stand up, walk away from that computer (I know you don’t want to!), and get to work.  When you’re all done the deals will be right here waiting for you.

Five Minute Challenge: Update On Our Closet

It’s been a crazy morning around here and there’s now way any Friday Fluffing Up is going to happen today . . . so I thought I’d update you on the state of our closet. 🙂  Hope you’ve had some time to catch up on your closets this week too!

Okie dokie. . . has anyone else worked on their closets this week? I had about an hour  last night to work on mine finally (yup, way more than five minutes. . . ), and here’s a peek at what’s heading to the donation bin:

I’ve got a blogging conference coming up next week and was hoping to hunt down a missing black sweater. . .  but after searching that full hour, it’s nowhere to be found. The one thing that I absolutely love about doing a good closet cleanout (despite the fact that I really don’t enjoy it all that much at all . . .)  is how it makes you so much more aware of what you already have.  I really thought I was going to have to spend way too much moo-lah as well as time shopping getting ready for the conference, but for the most part, I think I can make do with what’s been sitting in my closet along with some updated accessories.

(I did find these cute shoes yesterday on clearance for $10 to go with a dress I’ve had forever with nowhere to wear . . . nothing better than finding a great deal right in your closet! I never, EVER wear heels because I’m self-conscious about being too tall, so pray I don’t fall in these…. I know they’re short to most folks but they feel huge to me!)

If your closet could use a little tlc, take a few minutes this weekend to really get to work. . . I promise you’ll be glad you did.  I really was amazed at the treasures I found, and maybe you will be too!

Do you have any tips on cleaning out a closet in your home?  I’d love to hear them! Leave a comment to share . . . misery loves company, right? 😉

Did you take five or ten minutes yesterday to get rid of some clothes you no longer wear in your closet?  (If so, WOOHOOOO for you!)  Here’s today’s five minute challenge as we work toward picking up those closets a bit this week . . .

Set your timer for just 5 or maybe 10 minutes, and place all of your slacks and jeans together on hangers.  If you still have an extra minute or two, start organizing your tops too.

Ready, set, GOOOOOOO!  When you’re all done the deals will be right here waiting for you. 🙂
