30 Day Cleaning Challenge Day 2: The Bathrooms + Homemade Soap Scum Remover

  • Sumo

I’m joining Money Saving Mom’s 30-Day House Cleaning Challenge, and today spent more time than I wanted in the bathroom! I didn’t think this one would be much of a chore since I cleaned them before the weekend, however when I opened the shower door in our bathroom, I realized I had a little more work ahead of me than I bargained for. (Do you ever have something filthy in your home but somehow manage not see it? Yup, that’s the way I am about our shower. . . gross!)

I shouldn’t have a dab of soap scum in my shower according to Google. Not sure what I mean? Well, go Google “homemade soap scum remover” and see what happens to pop up. Yup, I should know how to do this one.

(My husband says it’s shocking to him that the girl who’s currently ranked #1 on google for homemade soap scum remover has quite possibly the yuckiest shower floor in the world. . . oops.)

So, here’s what 30 minutes spent on the bathrooms in our house looked like today:

  • Mixed a batch of Homemade Soap Scum Remover and sprayed it all over our shower to soak (Dawn Dish Soap really does work best)
  • Added cleaner to all the toilets and let them soak too
  • Cleaned all the mirrors and sinks in the bathrooms
  • Folded a load of laundry and started a new one so that the toilets and shower could soak an extra few minutes
  • Scrubbed the toilets . . . bleck!
  • Cleaned out the shower, including taking off the drain cover and giving it a good scrub.

Here I am when it was all done . . . happy, happy, happy! πŸ˜‰

It looks like tomorrow we’ll be working on the bedrooms, so stop back tomorrow night to see how it goes, and I’d love for you to join in too!

Are you working on any Spring Cleaning this month in your home? I’d love to hear if you have any cleaning tips, and you can see more about the 30-Day House Cleaning Challenge over HERE.

  1. once you sprayed it and let it soak, did you still have to scrub or did it wipe away easily?

  2. The floors wiped right off pretty easily because I think it soaked better. I do seem to have to scrub the walls a bit…. wish I could figure out an easier way to handle those!

After taking a shower I noticed how steamed up my walls were! So I ran and got my Swiffer cleaner and put a wet pad on it and cleaned my walls! So easy with little reach at all for high walls. Even got most of the area behind the toilet. Some of the walls are wallpaper and they look GREAT!

    Looks great!

Found you on my Pinterest page…I am doing the cleaning challenge as well. I did everything except the shower yesterday, so when I saw your soap-scum cleaner recipe I had to try it! πŸ™‚ My 10 yo daughter cleans our shower every week for one of her daily chores, but she doesn’t quite have strong enough arms yet, so there tends to be a soap scum build-up sometimes. I mixed up your recipe, sprayed it on the shower, went to do today’s challenge, and came back to scrub the shower. It took a little effort, because of the build-up, but my shower “looks like new” according to the 10 yo! Thanks so much!

  5. Laurie, this is fantastic! I have been using this for a while, but first heard about on PPP. Seems like you may have shared this before? I don’t know, but at any rate, this mixture is good to clean so many things – and cheap! It is my new favorite. I even told a lady about it in my local Publix last week. She was looking for something for soap scum and I told her about the Dawn and white vinegar. I even shared a coupon for the Dawn. She was so happy. Thanks for posting this!

P.S. I didn’t even know you were supposed to microwave it, I’ve been using it without warming it and it still has worked great!

  6. I have seen on a lot of sites as well as Pinterest about vinegar being used.My question is can you use Apple Cider Vinegar or does it have to be vinegar.Well when it comes to DIY cleaning products..thanx

  7. Love these ideals will have to try tom

We have found at our house full of boys/men, that using body wash instead of bar soap leaves much LESS soap scum in the tub. Who knew!

  9. ruth james says:

I have used Dawn and vinegar for at least 10 years! I leave the spray bottle in the shower and when I am in there anyways, I let it get wet and spray. It sort of “melts” and after I wash me I wipe the goo away and rinse.!!!!!

  10. I tried the homemade soap scum remover on my husband’s shower, the one that always gets left for last because the public seldom see it… It looks fabulous now!!! I squirted it down and let it soak, about half a day later I got in there with a pot scrubber and everything scrubbed right off! And t smelled wonderful too! Thanks for the inspiration! Made me want to clean all 3 of our bathrooms! Thank you so much!
