Tonight begins the season of Lent, and I was curious if any of you give up something during the Lenten season? Growing up Southern Baptist I never really participated, however the last several years I’ve usually given up chocolate (yikes!), and am planning to do that again this year. (I’m also thinking about giving up all baked goods, but it might just kill me . . . )
I’d love to know if you participate, and am just curious if this is a big deal for many of you! I do always think it’s just wrong when Ash Wednesday falls before Valentine’s Day, so needless to say I’ll be enjoying every last bite of chocolate today.

When I was growing up, I participated in the Easter tradition, Ashes for Ash Wednesday, giving up sweets for lent and even putting quarters in the Lent Card. Now that I am older, the church I attend doesn’t practice this. I feel sorta “neglected” but then again, I know the true meaning of the Lenten season and do my own form of worship.
I don’t know that our church practices it (although we do have an Ash Wednesday service!) I think you’re right – as long as we are aware of the meaning that’s what’s most important. Thank you so much for sharing Barbara!
I am like you about growing up as a Southern Baptist and did not hear that much about Lent. My husband and I started participating in Lent a couple of years ago and are doing it again this year. I am giving up sleeptime this year for Lent. I plan on getting up thirty minutes early to study my daily devotions and to work on memorizing scripture. Also, I have some friends who are participating this year and we can help keep each other accountable.
I love your blog and check it daily! Thank you for your saving ideas!!!!!
I have a friend who gives up somwthing every year and this year I am going to join her. I am giving up something that is not food (no, not FB either) that tends to consume a lot of my time without me realizing it.
I am Catholic so Lent is a big deal. I actually had no idea other denominations did not recognize or do anything special for Lent. Interesting. Last year, and again this year, I am doing the Daniel Fast. It is a neat way to get refocused on many levels. When it is difficult I unite my sufferings with Jesus and pray for a special intention. This draws me closer to our Lord and helps me to persevere in what I am giving up. Thanks for posting! A Blessed Lent to you!
I am giving up Facebook and replacing the insane amounts of time I was wasting on it with bible study and prayer. It hasn’t been nearly as hard as I thought it would be except now I can’t keep up with all of my couponing deals as easily!! Eep!! Haha..
I completely understand Amber – that’s a great one to give up (honestly, if I didn’t have to do it for PPP, I would l.o.v.e. the break from FB…. I try to stay off my personal page because it’s such a time sucker!!!)
