My son has been begging me to make homemade bread, so I finally made a loaf this week and wondered why on earth I didn’t double the batch! I love making homemade bread because it makes your meals stretch so much further – we enjoyed it with Taco Soup, and it amazed me how a simple loaf of bread can gussie up a tiny meal! You can even add a bargain bowl of Campbell’s Chunky Soup (Publix Essentials Price $1.29, use $.50/1 coupon), to make a simple frugal dinner feel so much heartier.
I had tried many different bread recipes before my friend recommended this a few years ago from Tammy’s Recipes, and it’s such an easy (and yummy!) bread recipe. If you have a breadmaker it’ll be incredibly simple, but you can manage this one even if you have to knead the dough all by yourself. Here’s what you’ll need . . .
1 cup warm water (110 – 115 degrees)
1 tablespoon milk
2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons honey $1/1 Burleson’s Pure Honey
2 tablespoons brown sugar $0.30/1 Domino Organic or Bemerara Sugar 10/17/2010 RP Insert (exp 12/31/2010), $0.50/2 Domino Sugar Products 8/29/2010 RP Insert (exp 11/30/2010), $0.30/1 Domino Sugar Product
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups all purpose flour $1/1 Eagle Mills Flour Can substitute up to half with whole wheat flour, I’ve made it both ways but was out of whole wheat flour this week!
2 teaspoons instant active dry yeast or active dry yeast $0.40/1 Fleischmann’s Yeast 10/3/2010 SS Insert (exp 1/2/2011), $0.40/2 Fleischmannn’s Yeast
Bread Machine Directions:
Put ingredients in the order above into bread machine (you don’t need to stir it , just dump it in!) Set bread machine on dough setting, and let it make the dough for you. Once dough is made (it takes my machine about 1 1/2 hours to make), remove dough and place in loaf pan. Let rise until double in size (around 1 1/2 – 2 hours, depending on temperate of your kitchen.) Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, and enjoy!
Note – if you’re away from home during the day you can let the bread machine do all the work for you, I just don’t like the wierd shape that my bread comes out in when I use the machine!
If you don’t have a bread machine . . .
First, say a prayer that you’ll find one at a yard sale (I really do love mine!) Then, go over HERE to see Tammy’s step by step instructions on how to make the dough at home – it really isn’t that hard, and she does a fabulous job giving step-by-step instructions!
Stop back by later this morning for some amazing Texas Roadhouse Style Cinnamon Butter to top this bread with as soon as it pops out of the oven. If you’re family’s anything like mine, this one might just win you the mommy-of-the-year award!
